Back when I worked at a thrift shop in Boston, we delivered used couches and such around to folks who ordered them. My bosses' mom - a tiny, ancient asian woman - decided to try to deliver a load of three couches stacked on top of each other, along with a table and four chairs, all strapped together. As she dared the Storrow Drive tunnel the top couch smashed into the side of the bridge, essentially bringing the entire back half of the truck off. I am astounded that nobody died.

Not long ago at all, I drove across the country along interstates. I noticed then that all the overpasses that I went under were in the 15-16 feet high range. I thought to myself, "Oh, I guess maybe the standard height for fitting under overpasses must be about 15 feet. Ok, good to know, trivia-wise, how tall tractor-trailers are." Filed it away in the old brain box. Felt like a minisculely bigger person for it. Now I know that never happened to Durham's civil engineers.

The following refers to the video, not a comparison of myself to Durham's civil engineers. It can, however, also be read in reference to those engineers as a direct commendation.

While fun to watch, it's hardly surprising. That's a railroad bridge. If it can support a train loaded with freight, it can easily shear the top off of just about anything.

Steel structures are so strong I think it actually confounds our natural assumptions about materials. There was a single I-beam taking all those hits (its there for just that purpose, not even part of the bridge proper) It can take the incredible momentum of an 18 wheeler careering down the road and *not even bend!*
