I was actually going to say "not shown : Jack Deth scuba diving for lost artifacts" then I remembered that was supposed to be Los Angeles and had to think fast.
Remember all the noise about how it would be a "waste" of money to rebuild New Orleans after Katrina?
Not hearing a lot of shit like that, here. I wonder if Ray Stevens will write a heartless derogatory song about the victims?
Don't get me wrong. I believe we should be pouring relief to the survivors and do what it takes to make their homes and cities whole again. It is our duty as human beings. I'm just still bitter about the naked scorn most of the nation showed towards the Big Easy when they were suffering.
President Bush was getting slammed hard for his shitty response to Katrina, so the Fox news/right wing response was basically victim blaming and Social Darwinism with a dash of racism.
One of the reasons things are different now is because we have a halfway-humane president.
Media spin is one thing. Attitudes of individuals are another.
I ceased friendships with people over horrible shit they said about the people of New Orleans. Even after I reminded these assholes of the Hell we ourselves had gone through with Ivan JUST ONE YEAR PRIOR, they still had zero empathy for the Katrina Victims.
Having lived there for several years, I salute you for that Binro. People have such a short and limited focus. Even with all the damned piles of information flowing at them constantly they have no idea how people really live.
My "favorite" arguments were about how "those people" should have stocked up their own supplies or gathered their families and evacuated before Katrina hit.
This was mostly coming from comfortably middle class white people who had no concept of what it's like to live hand-to-mouth on minimum wage and/or government assistance. These same assholes were the ones most eager to believe the outright lies coming from the media about widespread rape & murder in New Orleans and bullshit reports of people shooting at the relief workers.
Oddly, or perhaps understandably, many poor whites, even racist ones, showed some sympathy for the victims of Katrina because they could remember how rough things had been for them after Ivan.
