Tarantino is being Tarantino, but I do agree with him that an artist (good or bad, doesn't matter) doesn't have a responsibility to explain their work to anyone, and in fact I would prefer they don't.
One of the best comments on a piece of mine was written on a post-it-note: "I don't get it"
I still keep and treasure that note to this very day.

Anyway, how was the movie? Still haven't seen it myself, but so far I've read reviews that compare it *positively* to Basterds, and reviews that say it's *worse* than Basterds. Neither of those things are very encouraging.

I appreciate what Tarantino does though I've never had any delusions about his work being deep. What I appreciate more than the style and the tone is him taking a stand on film's ability to be pure fantasy and deriding the nannying whines of would-be censors like this.
Also, I respect him for knowing that a line exists for directors, especially for directors who have established an audience through transgression. The line is that like a magician you never talk about your art too deeply. Never call it art, never phrase it in any perspective other than how and what your audience perceives: as a director you exist to direct attention to your work that should speak for itself. Do more than that and you're just a cunt, but not in political way, just an arrogant cunt who likes to hear himself talk.
That's kind of true, though.

We're in yet another cycle of the news media trying to flop the same old tired "entertainment violence is linked to real violence" baggage on top of the creative community. I wish most artists in the entertainment industries would take a note from Tarantino here, regardless of your opinion of his ego. Artists have been answering for society's violent behavior for decades and maybe it is time for them to just stop engaging in this loaded dialogue.

Historical accuracy is what Lincoln was for. Django is like Basterds in that it's not how it happened, it's kind of how we wish it had happened.
Django is great, and the people who are complaining are trying to say that the man who makes movies where everyone has a blood pressure of 200 PSI isn't handle a subject with the proper sensitivity.

I don't think you actually can separate the creation from the creator. Movies say some much about the director it's unreal, and that's what Quentin is actually defensive about. Unfortunately this interview is now part of the film in my mind.

I figured out that Tarantino's movies were great in 1994. I figured out that his interviews are terrible... well, I think it was later in 1994. I don't watch these clips. I don't know if they'd ruin the movie for me, but the movie sure isn't going to redeem the experience of watching the terrible interview.

I'm kinda glad Tarantino made another movie so that he got to do a fresh round of press, because he's progressing nicely into his own douchey fantasyland. Seriously dude, "I'm not your slave"???

I felt like Django Unchained could have been a better, tighter movie if they cut out about half an hour. Basically, Tarantino needs someone to tell him "No, dude, your weird random movie references aren't awesome ideas that are full of artistic merit. No, normal audience members aren't going to watch your movie and say 'oh yes, I see how you are referencing films people in America didn't see that came out in the 60s! GOOD SHOW OLD CHUM!' People just want a good movie, so maybe you should tone that shit down..."
I didn't dislike Django Unchained, just felt like there's a better movie in there if it were massaged a bit.

But seriously, it is kind of ironic that they're discussing the effects of violent media on a TV news program, which has a huge body of research showing that it has a real negative effect on the psyches of its viewers: people who watch a lot of TV news are more likely to be racist and hold regressive views, be more afraid in their daily lives, and greatly overestimate the amount of violence and danger in their day-to-day life.
There was a pretty great Mean World Syndrome documentary on here that covered all of that, but it seems to be gone
