Oh god, for a while around 1993 I wanted to play Shadow of Cerberus so bad but eventually gave up when I learned there weren't any nearby servers so I'd be paying long distance. Dodged a bullet there.

So instead I went on to unknowingly downloading the Barney Doom mod from a British Colombia BBS number on the 2400 baud modem and getting my parents a 0 phone bill.

You can still play the game. It's called "Shadow of Yserbius". It's abandonware, and it's still a bit of a challenge.

Blue - 2013-02-19

Bad game? No, this is going to be the best game ever!

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-02-19

Isn't this game the one just about every "sexy female" WAV file came from for a decade after?

And I'm sure Larry Niven got a nod for his novel "Lucifer's Hammer," right? Or was his revenge just seeing this thing fall apart?

Well, all but 200 human beings are now dead, but this computer's voice has left me too bored to care. Let's auger this ship into Jupiter and never look back.

I think I got this in a bargain bin for a couple dollars around 1997 or 1998 and never managed to get it working properly on my state of the art Pentium II.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-02-19

I know its no Star Control 2, but I have a soft spot for space games, even the shitty ones.

Blue - 2013-02-19

Really? This one? I think you're thinking of it's playable sequel.

It was like playing one of those boring Civilization games only without any other countries or civilizations to play against. Also, there was shit on the box that wasn't possible to get ever.

I play this game sometimes too. Just the intro. It was half assed but I like getting to hit the launch buttons. Why the fuck aren't there games where I can do that? They replace all this shit with cutscenes and menus.

FABIO - 2013-02-19

Ironically Star Control 3 ended up a lot like this game.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-02-19

eww, SC3.
I hadn't played this game, I just meant that I enjoy space games generally. I'll steer clear if I see it on an abandonware site and get curious.

Blue - 2013-02-19

This is the most disappointing game ever made. I'm totally going to try sc2 now though!

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-02-19

Oh man, you're in for a treat. I've played through that game easily 5 or more times. I still get excited when I think of scanning planets and mining them for resources and artifacts. It has a lot more depth than it seems, so stick with it! You'll get sucked in before long.

Blue - 2013-02-20

I thought I was being clever calling my ship the Normandy.

OMG thank you so much! This is surprisingly entertaining. It doesn't just hold up well, I get the feeling that this is going to be one of the games I return to.

SC2 wasn't only ahead of its time, it's still ahead of most games NOW, in terms of depth of play, plotting, and intercharacter interactions. It's still, to me, a rare pinnacle of sandbox gameplay done right.

And that's kind of sad.

... meanwhile at NASA...

"Oh crap, an earth killing asteroid is heading right for us!"
"Damn, I never wanted to use our interstellar warp drive technology under these critical circumstances, but now we have no choice..."
"What? Can't we just..."
"Prepare the List of Two Hundred Females, I will take my place on the command deck of the Earth Defense Force flag ship at 0930 and set sail away from this grave of humanity for the New Hope Kingdom."
"But..., we have a missile defense shie..."
"If only all hope weren't lost, Jeff, you could come too. Alas."

FABIO - 2013-02-19

He left before Jeff could tell him about the thousands of nubile females in the mind shafts.

FABIO - 2013-02-19
