Not a joke:

Pretty much too good to be true, but it is.

I laughed my ass off when I first heard about the SHH gene in human embryology... and now, years later, the circle is complete. Like O_Z perfectly said, it is too good to be true, but it is.

The bonus round is to find out if the scientist who originally named it is, in fact, a high functioning autistic. Because that would be some kind of PoE singularity right there, and it's not even that unlikely.

Scientists "delighted" with brood of sabertoothed birds, receive DARPA funding for the Project Hitchcock.

If you are too dumb or poor for college, Your Inner Fish covers this subject matter in layman's terms, via evolutionary biology, very well.

everything, everything finally makes sense.

I did a paper about Robotnikinin for my Bio 1 class because it is named after my favorite gaming character and also I wanted to know exactly what the hell it did in the system. It turns out it's an inhibitor of the Sonic Hedgehog macrocycle ligand and could help prevent certain types of cancers (liver, pancreatic and melanoma for example) with the combination of Receptor Tyrocine Kinase inhibitors (RTKs). I did this paper before it was discovered that Sonic Hedgehog homolog (SHh) contributed to autism.

Funny how the protein inhibitor named after the villain is the actual hero of this story.

Somehow having a ligand pathway named Sonic Hedgehog which turns out to be contributing to cancer and autism seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy.

... ... ... G... God?

Old_Zircon - 2013-03-07

If creationists would start using this as their main argument instead of bananas and crocoducks and stuff they might get me thinking.

Old People - 2013-03-07

She's pretty cute.

takewithfood - 2013-03-07

There is a protein named after Pikachu, too. It's only a matter of time.

Toenails - 2013-03-07

I pray to God there's no genes out there named after Gadget from Rescue Rangers.

EvilHomer - 2013-03-07

That explains Tails' extra tails.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-03-07

And Sonic's freaky mono-eye.

Old_Zircon - 2013-03-07

What about Sonic ISN'T mutated and horrific?

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-03-07

His love of chili dogs, of course!

Old_Zircon - 2013-03-07

Point.

So when you really think about it, Sonic Hedgehog gave Chris-chan autism. Sonic trolled Chris-chan.
