I think it was this film that made me not like seeing Brad Pitt in anything ever again. Also, after watching some FX show on how they made Roger Rabbit, I couldn't understand why Bakshi hadn't done the obvious when making his film, like getting a mannequin for Pitt to put his arm around when interacting with a female 'toon instead of obviously hanging his arm in mid-air.

There were a number of problems with this. The studio apparently couldn't decide if they wanted something that was family-safe or unsafe, which created this piddling middle-of-the-road approach. There really wasn't much of an arc for the 'hero' in this film either. Of course that's just my opinion.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2013-03-10

Bakshi is awful, the movie would have been terrible whether or not the studio let him have tits and swears everywhere or not.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-03-10

Bakshi's run on the saturday morning version of Mighty Mouse was pretty good, though. Perhaps he actually had people editing his ideas to keep the worst off the air (like Nickelodeon did with John K).

If I remember this correctly, two things were happening: the cartoon blonde turned flesh-and-blood by fucking the guy, and the guy couldn't beat his cartoon enemies because of their cartoon powers. Why didn't he fuck them too?

SolRo - 2013-03-10

fucking your enemies to defeat them only works in La Blue Girl.

Noids do not have sex with Doodles!"

From what I understand and have heard/read elsewhere, this was originally intended as a horror film, but Bakishi was given another script entirely to work with by the studio, who had had their own ideas, and so on and so forth. The production was troubled to say the least - but the seething misogyny that runs through the film doesn't help much either, especially after it comes into bloom near the end.

Yay, this movie! The Ralph Bakshi movie that's too polished to be enjoyable.

NancyDrewFan123 - 2013-03-10

Aaaaagh, one of the most unpleasant viewing experiences of my life. This movie just had a grungy, unplesant quality that made me feel like I needed a long shower.

Binro the Heretic - 2013-03-10

Like all Bakshi, it starts with a promising premise then goes straight to shit. I'll cut him some slack this time because a lot of the problems were caused by studio executives interfering with the final product.

I understand the original plot involved a guy fucking a cartoon during what he thought was a wet dream and accidentally creating a human/cartoon hybrid that could tear apart reality.

Nikon - 2013-03-10

>a guy fucking a cartoon during what he thought was a wet dream and accidentally creating a human/cartoon hybrid that could tear apart reality

That premise sounds like it could be a pretty decent Twilight Zone episode.

FABIO - 2013-03-11

Where was it promising? Everything from the star should have been sending red flags that this was a terrible idea.

"We're going to cash in on Roger Rabbit."

"We're going to need some top animation department then."

"Nope."

"So we're going to badly animated classic cartoon characters?"

"Generic unknown ones."

"Well I guess we could just scribble some cute animals."

"Not cute, the opposite of that."

"So we're going to have a straight man like Bob Hoskins' character?"

"His mother dies in a head on motorcycle accident in the first 5 minutes."

"Who's directing the live actors?"

"Ralph Bakshi"

"SOUNDS GREAT!"

Nikon - 2013-03-11

The execution was bad. I don't think the premise itself is bad.

poorwill - 2013-03-11

This movie is agony.

Nikon - 2013-03-11

I saw it not too long ago, and you are absolutely correct.
