In fact I recall religious buildings being burned down by bigots, mass protests against peaceful community centers, laws written to ban the practice of religion and institute a state theology, a mass media attempt to indoctrinate the public into fearing benign religious practices, and the declaration from the highest levels of government that religions were dangerous ideologies that deserved no free speech protection.
