Simon pretty much predicts the next 30 years of hollywood films. Remarkable.

Xenocide - 2013-06-08

Yeah, but he loses piles of credibility for needlessly dumping on Walt Disney to make his point.

Actually, everyone's points were kind of stupid here (Siskel really wants you to know that kids were able to identify the characters, because that means the movie was good, I guess?) but at least Simon is correct in his assertion of how dumb and dehumanizing blockbusters (including most of the Star Wars series) are.

poorwill - 2013-06-07

It's sad that history has shown he sort of has a point.

EvilHomer - 2013-06-07

What him say?! Star War make me dumb? Me not Star Wars is dumbering! Him mouth speak CRAP!

Homer blaster-gun-gun make Simon bantha poo-doo now!!!

EvilHomer - 2013-06-07

I feel for him, though. He looks sooo miserable and beaten down. Like he's perpetually on the verge of tears, only he's cried so much that he just can't do it anymore, and now all he has to look forward to is whiskey and sleeping pills.

Just look at 2:40-2:50. Tell me that's not the most pained face you've ever seen. Poor guy.

The great irony is that ultimately, the best characteriAtion, plots and Tories to ever come out of star wars came from cartoons and video games.

And here I was all thinking it was that fart knocker Joseph Campbell...

Adham Nu'man - 2013-06-08

Wait till he sees Avatar...

John Simon is what's wrong with our country. Not because of his opinions on movies, but because he is illustrative of a type of person that started becoming prominent in the 80s: the joyless prick critical of the sort of weakness that would, for example, allow a child to enjoy a children's film. If pressed, Simon would insist that he's not being a prick, he's just being practical and he's trying to keep the American mind from closing; but in reality he's delighting in being a prick. (See also: George Will, Allan Bloom.) I say that's what allowed conservative hard-heartedness to become "cool", to the point where hard-heartedness eventually became the highest of conservative virtues.

memedumpster - 2013-06-08

Did this guy not see any other movies from that era?

Xenocide - 2013-06-08

A glimpse of the sadly bygone era of giant news anchor hair.
