PegLegPete - 2013-06-09 In the video he specifically referred to the "great firewall" - internet filtering - and mentioned the general political atmosphere. That article doesn't mention any of that, just surveillance capabilities that are undoubtedly less comprehensive than the ones right here in the USA as we have been so rudely exposed to. So really, that doesn't prove anything.

However we now know a lot more about how the NSA spies on the entire fucking world - including China - thanks to Snowden. To pretend that "Snowden's definition of freedom" is the same as mainland China's - or Hong Kong's - horrible and oppressive policies is ad-hominem straw-mannery at it's finest. You just don't like him for some reason.

PegLegPete - 2013-06-09 The straw man is assuming that his definition of freedom is the same as the government of the PRC when it's clearly not. Once again, we really don't know why he didn't go somewhere else, but to insinuate that he identifies with everything that a country does just because he has fled there is misleading to put it politely. Who says he hasn't already left Hong Kong and was just staying there temporarily or misinforming his would-be assailants? If you watch the interview he talks about maybe going to Iceland - perhaps he'll be offered asylum. He stated his reasons for going to Hong Kong during the interview and we don't have any good reason to surmise that it's something other than that. You can certainly keep asking people like me who don't anything other than what Snowden said though.

I'm thinking about organizing a protest outside my local federal court. He's absolutely right in that if nothing changes as a result of these leaks we are proper fucked.

His personal story stinks on ice. The information he is leaking reveals little outside of the actual names of the programs. The actual issues were discussed back in 2007 and earlier still. Now all of a sudden it is important? Why?
BTW, the American People are by and large fine with this, Ed. I mean, I don't like it, and you claim not to either, but if you put it to a vote, you know what will happen. So what do you say to that?

Folks are totally overlooking the real issue here- a handful of businesses control more than 90% of the information in the world, and they have no qualms about turning it over to US government without any kind of subpoena. AND it's all totally legal. Can you blame the government for going for such a ripe, enormous source of free information? It's stupid to think they wouldn't. Even your terms of service to these companies PERMIT what they do. Once again, life immitates Deus Ex- good job giving Bob Page the Aquinas Hub, dingleberries.
Is it unethical? Maybe. But the bottom line is people are butthurt because they let this situation happen, out of love for our information economy and the many conveniences it confers. Sloth and insecurity have made us willing pawns in a society that mirrors 1984, if big brother just read your sexts instead of torturing you then sticking you in a dingy cafe to wait for assassination.
As an aside, you all should REALLY read the NSA powerpoint about all this that got leaked. It looks like it was made by a fifth grader.
