I'm predicting the PS4 makes the same anti-consumer mistakes as Microsoft and then some. They didn't have backward compatibility with their last console, so why should they have it with this one?
If Steam actually manages to make their console as user-friendly as their Steam platform for PC, then they're going to win out, I think. If they can manage to sell movies/TV shows in the same way (buy them, download them to watch, delete them, download them again later if you want), they should boot all competing platforms out of the media delivery market as well.

Aubrey McFate - 2013-06-10 Well, to be fair, backwards compatibility was only ever in consoles in the first place by chance. Most of the systems had it because they had some form of the old hardware either running as part of the new system or it just wasn't really that different from the old system (like, say, the Wii and the Gamecube). The PS3 was only ever backwards compatible because they basically put a PS2 board in the box along with the regular system guts. The only other option is software emulation, which they tried with the 360, and that was a piecemeal mess. If the PS4 isn't backwards-compatible, it's more likely that they can't emulate PS3 stuff on their new port-friendly non-Cell system architecture and they can't cover the cost of putting a free PS3 in every box. Don't misunderstand me, they can (and probably will) make some bad consumer decisions, but this one does make some sense.
As for the Steam box...I have no idea what the hell that thing is going to be, and I get the feeling that Valve really doesn't either. The weird linux box they're making now probably won't dethrone any of the consoles soon.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2013-06-10 Not only did Sony not make the same mistakes, they smiled as they twisted the knife, as they would into a Giant Enemy Crab.

I'm just hoping nobody buys the new consoles and Sony and Microsoft keep the PS3 and 360 around for a few more years.

At this point it might be Sony's game to lose. Announcing the PS4 only in the vaguest terms turned out to be a smart move in the long run: it forced Microsoft to tip its hand before it was ready, and now Sony has had time to see exactly what everyone hates about the Xbox 1 and Wii U, so when they announce specifics on the PS4 they can avoid that bullshit and snap up the huge number of consumers who are feeling abandoned by the other two consoles.
This is assuming, of course, that Sony doesn't just find new and fascinating ways to piss people off even more. Which is likely.

Well, I'd say this is gearing up to be worse than the '83 crash.
Everything that hasn't been sworn in secrecy has been a bunch of wishy-washy consumer/anti-consumer bullshit so unpromising that it falls just short of Purina Dog Chow, Kool-Aid Man and Atari porn.

5 stars for forcing me back to my original platform - the computer. Not gonna buy an xbox 360 next II whatever. Not gonna buy a ps4 (unless they allow 360 controllers (haha) or mouse/keyboard support that isn't retarded and backwards.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2013-06-10 As a recent convert to PC gaming, I have to ask: How the fuck does any human being on the planet find mouse-and-keyboard superior to a controller? What sort of wristless octopi are PC gamers?

As someone that has been increasingly finding video games harder to actually sit down and play for at least five years now, Microsoft going out of their way to throw up barriers to play just turns me right the fuck off.
If Sony's console lets me buy sports games and play them when I want immediately when I turn on the console, that's the one I'll (maybe) buy.

Yeah. I think everyone can agree with him on this one. Hooray! Back to mouse aiming!

The Playstation 4 will cost 0 less than the Xbox One and will not require you to sign a 37-page contract allowing the SS to break into your home once a night and demand to see your papers.

.....okay, I wanted to leave it at that, but this seriously bothers me. Normally, if a gaming console doesn't appeal to me, I just don't buy it. But this is different. Microsoft's anti-consumer policies have turned my attitude towards it from Mild Apathy to Shrieking Rage. The idea that we, as consumers, should pay full retail price for a product without retaining complete control is terrifying. At this moment, there are innumerable multinational corporations ready to pounce on the idea of wresting control away from consumers and back towards themselves. The Xbox One's success could vindicate their worst fantasies. It must fail.
