I had a relative live in Louisiana. After the umpteenth chemical spill she moved out, fearing her eventual kids would be born with three heads or something.
Louisiana sounds like its an experiment in letting energy and chemical companies ass-fuck an entire state (as opposed to the comparatively minor ass-fuckings that go on everywhere else).

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-08-14 We don't have enough money to be unethical. This game is free-to-play, but not only do you have to buy the best buffs, there's a credit check before you're allowed to even see the list of those for sale.
|
memedumpster - 2013-08-14 You mean I just wasted all my time grinding to a higher level only to run into a gameplay wall saturated with callous out of touch unhelpful douchebags who hate me if they can't take my money?
My god, it's DC Universe all over again.

Vulnerable people being exploited by a lack of corporate oversight. That's pretty much the story of modern America.
|
jangbones - 2013-08-14 don't forget the accompanying chorus that corporate oversight and overregulation are destroying America
|
SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-08-14 Indeed. Libertarians will scream bloody murder that there's too much regulation of corporations, yet can't point to anything stopping them from doing whatever they want.

I saw video of the sinkhole forming, it was spectacular.

chumbucket - 2013-08-14
Texas Brine, even the name sounds unhealthy.
|
Oscar Wildcat - 2013-08-14
Seems the sinkhole has a facebook page. Some 5432 people "like" the hole. It has far more friends than I do...but that's understandable.

exy - 2013-08-14
If you ask me, a town that full of America-haters deserves to get sunk.
|
lordyam - 2013-08-14 you sound like an america hater, you should be sunk
|
Oscar Wildcat - 2013-08-14 The hole itself is that most exemplary American: it does not differentiate between race, class or creed. It simply swallows you whole then spits out a poisonous mixture of brine, oil and natural gas.

Most of the people who were forced to evacuate this town have been, and still are, being paid around 0 a week by Texas Brine. Others have been given buyouts.
Yeah I know that doesn't make them the moral pinnacle of generosity or anything, but I will give them credit for a legit attempt at some sort of upfront compensation instead of making people go through eight years of court hearings before they see any. That's way more than most companies do.

There's a direct philosophical line from the Middle Passage of slave trade to this. Human lives are meaningless before the altar of the Golden Calf.
