Crud, could someone tell me what the active "comments disabled" tag is?

Bort - 2013-08-16

Uh, "comments disabled"?

Is this one of those "what's the number for 911" questions?

memedumpster - 2013-08-16

Thanks!

Oscar Wildcat - 2013-08-16

Let's create a safe space to ask the tough questions, then disable it. Because we're wrong, and we know it. (crickets)

Bort - 2013-08-16

I grew up Catholic, and the thing about most (American) Catholics is, doubt is engineered into their faith from the beginning. You belong to a two thousand year old religion whose glory days are long past and not entirely glorious, you are taught a bunch of stuff (the Trinity, transubstantiation) that contradicts logic, and even the Pope concedes that the Bible can't be treated like a science text. So it's by no means a deal-breaker when you encounter a professor who introduces you to the Documentary Hypothesis -- whatever faith you still hold by that point is accompanied at all times by the awareness that some, most, or all of what you believe could be complete bullshit.

As much as TheologyMom is talking like she's a member of the fundamentalist community, she's actually being more subversive than anyone realizes (maybe even more thans she herself realizes). Fundamentalism is incompatible with the hard questions.

chumbucket - 2013-08-16

I also grew up Catholic but it wasn't the religion itself that eventually turned me off. It was when I started to actually listen to the drivel about politics and money and realized this all felt like a sham. Maybe they should try making the "religions" they support into actual religion and not all the claptrap that surrounds it.

Monkey Napoleon - 2013-08-16

This IS pretty subversive, as the best tactic for them really is to teach their children to blow off the tough questions and not to engage in debate at all.

Bort - 2014-01-11

One more thing: if TheologyMom is so worried about kids' attrition from the faith, it's not the big questions that have been stumping theologians for millennia, it's the obsession with homophobia and other right-wing causes. Your kid has gay friends (or might even be gay himself), you no longer have the monolithic cultural power to shove gay-hate down their throats.

misterbuns - 2013-08-16

so brave to stand in front of Cthulhu's puckered anus like that.

themilkshark - 2013-08-16

Sorry, religion is dumb, just like turtlenecks and floppy hairdos.

spikestoyiu - 2013-08-16

Who better to teach us about Christianity than a cartoon lesbian?

Blue - 2013-08-16

Does anybody remember the name of that conservative theologian that thought that people should know theology? I know he's been getting smeared in Christian circles as a crank, despite the fact that the only difference between him and mainstream conservative theologians is that they believe the same stuff but they don't talk about it with non-theologians.

Mother_Puncher - 2013-08-16

The way I'm viewing this beefy Christian woman is that she is flying at me super fast in a very confident way because that background looks like some kind of anime shit

themilkshark - 2013-08-16

The hair flapping makes it look kinda windy too

Old_Zircon - 2013-08-16

Kathy Bates had a child with Berengar from The Name Of the Rose?

Toenails - 2013-08-16

Your beliefs can't hold up against the questions of a 9th grader, but yeah, it's your dumb kid's fault.

TEACH YOUR CHILD THE INANE LOGIC OF THE TRINITY AND WATCH THE ATHEISTS MELT LIKE THE WITCHES THEY ARE!!!!

Bort - 2013-08-16

Oh, Patrick. The Trinity isn't logic, inane or otherwise.
