Crud, could someone tell me what the active "comments disabled" tag is?

I grew up Catholic, and the thing about most (American) Catholics is, doubt is engineered into their faith from the beginning. You belong to a two thousand year old religion whose glory days are long past and not entirely glorious, you are taught a bunch of stuff (the Trinity, transubstantiation) that contradicts logic, and even the Pope concedes that the Bible can't be treated like a science text. So it's by no means a deal-breaker when you encounter a professor who introduces you to the Documentary Hypothesis -- whatever faith you still hold by that point is accompanied at all times by the awareness that some, most, or all of what you believe could be complete bullshit.

As much as TheologyMom is talking like she's a member of the fundamentalist community, she's actually being more subversive than anyone realizes (maybe even more thans she herself realizes). Fundamentalism is incompatible with the hard questions.

Does anybody remember the name of that conservative theologian that thought that people should know theology? I know he's been getting smeared in Christian circles as a crank, despite the fact that the only difference between him and mainstream conservative theologians is that they believe the same stuff but they don't talk about it with non-theologians.
