Caminante Nocturno - 2013-11-26
ADV, you were just too good for this world.

If there was one thing ADV was good at, it was editing trailers together.
They could take the shittiest shit in their catalog, mix the best clips with said shit's theme song, and suddenly you were watching a preview for the next "Akira" or Satoshi Kon movie.

sasazuka - 2013-11-27 ADV's NEW CUTEY HONEY OVA trailer doesn't really count, as it's a trailer for a single show using the theme song. I'm talking about montage trailers of many different anime.

Anime on DVD? Is such a thing even possible?
Years ago I used to post at a forum where there were a few anime enthusiasts who attempted to share their hobby with other people on the board, one of them chose to do this by starting about a dozen different threads in the section devoted to entertainment media, bitching about ADV doing things like only releasing one of it's "adult" cartoon titles on VHS in dubbed form only, railing against them for ignoring those among their customers who couldn't afford this brand new DVD toy which was for rich jerks only.
|
Quad9Damage - 2013-11-26 What made me swear off VHS and start moving toward a DVD upgrade was when I bought two volumes of "Sakura Diaries" on VHS. My aunt's ancient VCR destroyed one of them; the other played like it was third generation copy.
|
EvilHomer - 2013-11-26 By the time DVD was out in force, I'd already moved on to warez.
|
EvilHomer - 2013-11-26
God, I loved Battle Angel Alita.
|
|
EvilHomer - 2013-11-26 Don't have the videos anymore, all I've got are the mangas. :(

PlusDome - 2013-11-26
MANGA had KMFDM.

Xenocide - 2013-11-26
Special appearance by Evangelion as The One People Still Remember.
|
sasazuka - 2013-11-26 Too bad the first round of EVANGELION releases on DVD looked like total ass (lots of artifacts, washed out colours, and, for absolutely every shot change, you got a shake on the first frame). They were so bad that it made me ask, "I upgraded from Laserdisc for this?".
|
Quad9Damage - 2013-11-26 I remember all of these, mostly because I wore out all my ADV tapes.
I still have my subbed-only DVD collection of "Sakura Diaires" from years ago. To this day I've never watched it all the way through. "Ruin Explorers" and "Legend of Crystania" were burned into my brain through sheer advertising force - never saw either one of those.
"Slayers: The Motion Picture" used to be a favorite of mine until I had a startling epiphany that it's really, really bad.
I want all my wasted time back after sitting through "Evangelion."
|
Nikon - 2013-11-26 I'm watching Slayers: The Motion Picture as I type this as I intend to go through the entire run of Slayers again.
I enjoyed the original Evangelion TV series and had a fun time discussing it back in college, but I want to wait a little longer before I rewatch all of those.
|
Kid Fenris - 2013-11-26 I never cared much for Slayers, but I really liked Ruin Explorers, oddly enough. And Ruin Explorers is a big corny Slayers rip-off. And I still like it, too.
|
Nikon - 2013-11-26 Ruin Explorers was a lot of fun. It's a shame it only got a few OVA episodes.
If you haven't already seen it, give Slayers NEXT a shot. Inmho that's the best Slayers overall.
|
Quad9Damage - 2013-11-26 I still love the "Slayers" TV episodes, though it really starts sliding with TRY and crashes and burns at Revolution/Evolution-R. I dislike the movies and OVAs; the dubs make them even worse.
I remember "Slayers: The Motion Picture" being one of the many, many ADV releases where ADV used the box cover to trick dumb then-13-year-old me into thinking it was going to be a wanton titty fest. "One's cool! One's hot! One's busting out all over! The other's not!" The most proactive thing on that tape was probably the "New Cutey Honey" trailer.
"Slayers: The Motion Picture" is also what got me into the much better "Slayers" TV episodes.
|
Caminante Nocturno - 2013-11-26 One of the most infamous examples of ADV's deceptively racy advertising is Sakura Diaries, a dumb soap opera anime that they basically advertised as softcore porn.
|
sasazuka - 2013-11-27 To be fair, the SAKURA DIARIES manga is a lot steamier than the anime was, but the anime only covers a small fraction of the story and has its own ending.
|
Quad9Damage - 2013-11-27 Oh God, I remember that. "When it comes to sex, she wrote the book on it!"
That was the actual ADV tagline on the back of the first "Sakura Diaries" VHS volume, which was later revealed to be the censored and edited down TV version. ADV would later release the uncensored version, which was a lot racier but nowhere near the hardcore hentai they aggressively marketed this stupid show as being.
That was ADV's M.O back in the day: plaster as many racy slogans and as much cleavage on their box covers as possible to sell more tapes. Anime companies still do this to a degree, but never at the ADV level.
