I think I saw the "original" when I was a kid years ago. Much like Tezuka's "Kimba," it was always one of those movies I assumed was a rip-off of a Disney film, only to realize that the opposite was the case years later. This is absolutely wonderful.

Has anyone here seen Persistence of Vision, the documentary about this? It's playing in Toronto in a few days at Bloor cinema. With participation from the director & some animators. bit.ly/1ayEUve

Grim Natwick, who animated the Betty Boop cartoons, did the witch scene. It was the last work he ever did before his death.

I watched this whole thing like five years ago and, well...

It's not that great. I mean yeah, some scenes are absolutely gorgeous, and impressive as hell when you consider that it was all painstakingly hand drawn with zero aid from computers.

But that's really all that I can find redeeming about it. As a piece of eye candy is wonderful; as a film, it's dreadfully boring, dull, and soulless.

I find it hilarious that Disney haters go out of their way to claim that Aladdin is a ripoff of this movie, when Aladdin is actually a great film, and is in no way, shape, or form like this movie. It's like people don't know where the Aladdin story came from. It's almost as hilarious as the people who think The Lion King is a ripoff of that shitty white lion anime, and that Atlantis: The Lost Empire is a ripoff of that shitty Nadia anime, and that Treasure Planet is a ripoff of that shitty Titan A.E.
