I got this game for christmas one year, and played it religiously for quite some time, sadly this game also got me into fear factory for a brief time.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2014-01-15

Yeah. Religiously... I dont known if you remember but they released a demo of the 1st level that would quit after so many minutes. I played that over and over so many times! I also really liked the music.
... I was easily amused back then!

BorrowedSolution - 2014-01-15

Haha, I'd forgotten about the demo; that pissed me off so much after I got to the point where I could rack up enough time to actually be cut off.

Scrimmjob - 2014-01-15

I loved the music in this game too, maybe a year after this came out a friend of mine had the album all the music was from, It blew my mind at the time. Now I'm glad the in game music is instrumental.

This is still my favorite racing game and I'm pissed there hasn't been a worthy successor in the "racing game where you run over pedestrians" genre.

For all the bad press 90s gaming gets these days, I'd still take Postal and Carmageddon over all the Hollywood AAA garbage that's being shoveled at us today.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-01-15

Postal was really bad, but okay. I still have the Carmageddon CD-ROM in a box, and I think that the last time I tried installing it, I had some 32-bit to 64-bit compatibility issues. Any idea on how to get it to run? I have DOSBox for DOS games, but Windows95 era is still a mystery to me.

SolRo - 2014-01-15

I haven't played the original, but Camageddon 2 is awesome.

Wasted a lot of my teens having fun with the crash physics engine. It's -STILL- the best car damage simulation in a game afaik. Everything else is just an unbreakable brick layered in some sheet metal.

SolRo - 2014-01-15

JBF; try compatibility mode?

if all else fails, try to 'pirate' a working copy, and feel good since you actually paid for it in the first place.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-01-15

Carmageddon 2 is basically the same, but with stupid "challenge" things every 3 levels or so.

I believe my copy was pirated, so I'm not up on the controls as much as I should be, but were you supposed to be able to repair your car mid-race? I figured it was either some kind of cheat key or I was burning up points I'd earned mowing people down.

SolRo - 2014-01-15

there were repair power up type things scattered across each map, among other interesting ones.

Toenails - 2014-01-15

Steam: Yeah, repairing you car with the "Backspace" key cost you money.

Gmork - 2014-01-15

SOLRO you must not have been paying attention to games lately, i've seen other games that allow the car to split in half.

But yeah carmageddon had all those other games beat by a good decade, so point taken

BorrowedSolution - 2014-01-15

There's a version of Dosbox that has glide wrappers for handling games like Carmageddon. You also have to download nglide or something; just google it, I did it the other day, it was "fairly" easy.

^^ Follow this guide. Mind the gap in the URL.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-01-20

Thanks! I'll give it a shot.

Gmork - 2014-01-15

I played the MOTHERFUCKING SHIT out of this on my PPC, G3, G4. Nobody can see me at multiplayer, especially on #2! Fuck, this game is still so good with mods.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-01-15

Any mods you'd recommend especially?

Gmork - 2014-01-16

There are extra tracks, but IMO the best mods are new vehicles - there is a decent imperial stormtrooper riding a speederbike, and the physics for how each car handles, especially modded cars, can be really drastic and crazy. I remember someone who was in love with cars made a WAY TOO FAST ferrari enzo car. And i'm talking too fast for a real enzo. That thing could jump all the way across certain maps if you hit the right ramp.

I hope the programs used to manage/install mods (the ones that weren't drag and drop) are still workable on today's PCs.

infinite zest - 2014-01-15

The flagger guy looks surprised. Wasn't he listening to the PA system guy?

SolRo - 2014-01-15

Surely they wouldn't endanger event staff, right?

The Mothership - 2019-07-22

Played the shit out of this game, and did not pay for it at all. WAREZ!
