Cool! I had no idea. It'd be cool if they did one of these for the Ellison/Zug I Robot too. I liked David Lynch's Dune, but I saw the movie way before I read the books so that vision was kind of stuck in my head.

Speaking of which, if there's any movie that needs a remake, it's I Robot. Fuck it, let's redo Dune too. The scifi miniseries was more true to the novel, but I thought it kind of sucked. I'd happily see two of my favorite books done right as movies.

Dune definitely deserves a GOOD movie.

Lynch's Dune was, to me, one of those movies I loved as a kid before I knew anything about Blue Velvet, Eraserhead, everything else he had done up to that point. The extended version, if I recall, is a lot longer (close to four hours) but of course they had to cut it down because it was marketed as basically another Star Wars. It got me into Frank Herbert and the Dune universe in general, so that's something.. but yeah after reading the books I was like "huh?"

A lot of movies around that time, like Blade Runner, Total Recall, etc. were gleaned off of short stories where you could run wild with the source material, but yeah Dune was kinda the opposite. But keep in mind I was a kid who loved, and still loves, Bakshi's LotR over Jackson's :)

Don't be ashamed, I liked the animated LotR better than Jackson's version too! No snowboarding elves and Elijah Wood goes a long way.

I thought Wood and Bloom were good choices and enjoyed all 3, but yeah I didn't care for the "let's get kids into LotR with Star Wars style action" approach. That's what Star Wars is for. I refuse to see them, but it seems like Jackson's learning this the hard way with the Hobbit films.

My dad was telling me that the studio and filmmakers were concerned that nobody would see the original Episode IV and Lucas' whole concept would be a flop. Imagine an alternate reality where that happened and Lucas or Spielberg were tagged to make Dune.

Man, I would have loved this. Part of me wants to be cynical and say that one man's enthusiastic and original vision for Dune would have been considerably compromised by the money required to make such a movie, but still. The director of The Holy Mountain wants to make a crazy Dune adaptation? It's worth the attempt.

infinite zest - 2014-03-02

Hell, I thought the Holy Mountain and El Topo were a lot less fucked up than Eraserhead and Lynch's early shorts and they let him take a shot at it..

Koda Maja - 2014-03-02

Jodorowsky's Dune would have been a complete mess, but man would it have been a beautiful mess.

Starships powered by fucking. That is all.

Sold!

Old_Zircon - 2014-03-03

Been hearing about this for years but the trailer already already has stuff I didn't know. The story about Orson Welles alone is 5 stars.

infinite zest - 2014-03-03

I guess I'll need to see the doc, but I wonder if this concept had anything to do with Welles agreeing to be the voice of Unicron in Transformers. Like "why would an actor and director of my calibre agree to be in a Hasbro Toy Commercial? Oh sweet Dinobots! Sold!"

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-03-06

Wonderful. I wish i could go to the alternate dimension where it was actually made.
