So what changed, and how did it come about?

I eventually realized that at the crux of all of these 'arguments' is an attempt on the part of the whackjob to elicit an emotional response from their target audience. Eventually most CT documentaries devolve into accusations of Satanism or Reptilian overlords, blah blah, I don't need to enumerate all of them here, suffice it to say that it comes down to a bunch of magical hooey that has never jived well with me. Once I saw that it was all pinned on a foundation of emotional resonance, I started to wonder if there wasn't a better way to acquire knowledge than whether or not it 'feels right' to me.

So I started taking their hallowed advice to "do your own research", which worked about as well as my Christian family members giving me a bible to read at a young age. That led me to find tons of blatant lies in all of this CT bullshit, and also into philosophy, critical thinking and having an emotional breakdown when I shone my new-found mental acuity onto my own cherished opinions and beliefs.

It was an interesting time.

My parents are more firmly in the 'sovereign citizen' category, they aren't especially militant about conspiracy theories, other than taking most of the big ones for granted because, you know, government BAD! They actually seem to be slowly thinking their way out of it, I've noticed. I think interacting with me after I've done such an abrupt and total about-face on all of this garbage is having some effect. I sure fucking hope so, anyways: they're kind of boring at the moment.

You're right, their predicament is better described as "not even wrong"; they lack the intellectual framework to be able to critically assess information. This is exacerbated by a species that prizes emotional appeals and finds facts to be dry and boring. It's all fairly intelligible, the trick is doing anything at all with the information we can glean from all of this.

That probably explains why it's virtually impossible to productively engage with most of these people on this stuff. You're not really having the same discussion.
