Weird. I was just about to post something about my dad's high school in LaCrosse Wisconsin who were also the Red Raiders. In that case it was a very stoic-looking Menominee Indian, not a caricature like the Cleveland Indians' but they changed it to a Knight in armor. A small mostly conservative, mostly white town on the Mississippi, and nobody complained about the transition.

completely off topic but I looked up my old high school (the cleveland warriors and wilson trojans.. I got transferred a lot) and my best/only high school friend is in the wikipedia entry's "notable alumni" for the Guiness Record for "most high fives in an hour" :)

my old school mascot was the Cossacks but they changed it when students demanded they change it to something that didn't kill Jews. I think now it's a wolf or something.

They should have changed it to a person of indeterminate race burning the village and spilling the red blood of a second person of indeterminate race.

Then it would all be cool.

Pretty sure wolves'll kill Jews, too.

I would have gone with changing the mascot to a sunburned viking, but that works too.

They're now know as the Thunderhawks.

My HS mascot was the Fightin' Rebel, an angry Confederate soldier, and the school symbol was confederate battle flags. We're in Ohio for chrissake.
