Same guy that did Bullit and the French Connection.

70s car chases were the best because the cars were giant fucking tanks with sloppy-ass suspension, they bounced and slid and flopped all over the road / through orange carts.

And because these chases were the real deal with stuntman doing seriously dangerous shit. It FEELS dangeous. CGI has ruined it all.

Also check the Ozploitation flick The Man From Hong Kong (1975). Some serioulsy fun car chases and stuntwork.

They also had these gigantic, loud, gas guzzling, could give a fuck about the environment, v8 engines shoving all that metal at high speeds. Although I am sure a lot of these sounds are added in post, the audio has that really visceral sound of gigantic engines pushing themselves to their limits.

Hell, even Eat My Dust is a minor masterpiece of sorts.

Roads and driving styles recognized from playing too much GTAIV

Look at those adorable cops, they don't even have kevlar vests and helmets! And that's a normal car and not some hyper-aggressive mine-resistant ambush protected vehicle! What a quaint and naive time it must have been.

Hmm, I thought Roy Scheider was driving an early 1970s Pontiac Le Mans, but, according to IMCDb.org , it's a 1973 Pontiac Ventura.

Very similar front ends, although I suppose that's to be expected from the same GM marque.

If anyone cares, the other car in the chase is a 1973 Pontiac Grand Ville, and the police car is a 1968 Plymouth Fury.

I was interested, and thank you. Also this is a great vintage car chase.

I came across this film late on TV one night just a few minutes before the car chase; it has that certain viscerality that a lot of heavily CGI'd car chases are missing today.
