I don't think they killed off the blue ranger but wouldn't be surprised if they curtailed his role given that the green ranger is a devout Christian who subscribes to a very fundamentalist and "manly" interpretation. As far as Japanese sentai goes - they all exist in their own universes so it work the same way as the (more or less) connected American universe.

The Voltron thing went like so. In the original Japanese, Sven (whatever his name was, maybe Suwen-san) was killed off early, and his identical brother showed up later in a cave. In the American version, Sven was injured but not killed off, and was recuperating in a ... hospital cave? Something.

American Voltron had more people swearing vengeance after the bad guys killed nobody and destroyed nothing.

According to the Power Rangers Wiki, Blue's departure from the show was a variation on going back to his home planet (it was actually the home planet of his girlfriend). However, it's worth noting two things. First, the Blue Ranger position wasn't actually retired; after the original Blue left, they passed the color on to a new Blue Ranger. All in all, there seems to have been something like a dozen different Blue Rangers over the entire franchise. Second, the original Blue, Billy Cranston (who was apparently named after Bryan Cranston) was actually the longest serving member of the original team, and second longest serving actor in the entire franchise (spinoff actors included). By the time Billy Cranston left, all the other original Rangers had been long since written off the show and replaced with new characters.

And yes, according to DuckDuckGo, the actor had some major behind the scenes beef with everyone over his gayness. I don't believe this was why he left, but it is why he refuses to appear at any reunions.
