The great door war of 20XX

Binro the Heretic - 2014-10-07

Why is the xenomorph so fucking LOUD?

The Mothership - 2014-10-07

Yea, immediately disappointing; xenos slither, that thing sounds like the Predator. Also why are the lights so bright?

fedex - 2014-10-07

I think she came at :46

Sputum - 2014-10-07

I'm sorry but if that is what you think a girl cumming sounds like, you are bad at sexin

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-10-07

I've heard from Ars Technica that this is a beautiful game with a shitty stealth system and awful story, and from Rock Paper Shotgun that it's the best Alien game available (though he had some plot issues he didn't want to spoil on release day).

At least it's not a unanimous "IT SUCKS" like Colonial Marines.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-10-07

SJW detected.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-10-07

Do what now?

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2014-10-07

I wouldnt trust any reviews of games from ars technica. Theyre not game journalists. I often get the impression they play a game, are bad at it, rage quit and then write a negative review. They seem to just review based on their personal preferences and do not attempt to be objective.
The writers at ars are mostly a bunch of shiny gadget aficionados. It is a good site if you wish to know which new gadget is shiniest + generally catch up on the haps.
Imo some of the best game reviews are actually by IGN. Their reviews are very professional, there are no stupid personal anecdotes or jokes. they often stick to critiquing or praising more concrete and measurable technical aspects of the game. From reading an IGN review you can tell whether the game is well made or not. Thats all I want from a review, whether you will actually like the game or not after that is a matter of taste you must decide yourself.
We all know they will gush about the latest (sponsored) shit from a big studio like blizzard, naughty dog or bungie. But often those games *are* well made on a technical level and it should be obvious that they are the "hollywood blockbuster" style of game (and are shit imo, though I'm not holding it against anyone for liking them)

StanleyPain - 2014-10-07

I've watched a few videos of people playing it's basically artistically gorgeous but the game mechanics are shit.
Here's what happens: You are walking around and then your motion detector goes off which means the xeno is coming, so you hide. And hide. And hide some more. And spend 10 minutes starting at nothing until the xeno goes away. Then you keep moving. Then you randomly get killed with no warning, even when you get into locations that have no other entrances, and the motion detector never goes off.

Basically you randomly die constantly for no reason and the exact cues that would help you figure out when it is safe to do X and not safe to do X (which virtually every stealth game ever has had) basically don't exist. Being stealthy gets you killed. Not being stealthy gets you killed. Sitting in a locker for an hour and not making a sound gets you killed.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2014-10-08

I'm not saying the game is good. Just that I dont as a rule lend any credence to games reviews from ars.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-10-08

Whatever happened to knowing what a reviewer was like before claiming a review from them was "untrustworthy" or whatever?

Take Yahtzee for example. I'll actually consult his reviews before buying some games, because I know what his review style is and how to tell if a game might interest me based on his delivery. Similarly, if I play a game and I find out later I have a similar experience to Ars Technica, maybe I'll see if those opinions line up with other games they and I have played.

I find it weird that people are saying that so-and-so's review is wrong because they disagree with it when the whole effing thing is someone's opinion. I don't have to be a director to give my two cents on a movie, so why does someone have to be a hard-core gamer who used to code for their review to be more valid than someone else's who played the same game?

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-10-07

Sounds like an anime girl having sex.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-10-07

At least you're upping your age range.

CrimsonHyperSloth - 2014-10-07

If this had Oculus Rift support I'd give it a shot, if only to entertain my girlfriend with my shrill screams and crying.

FABIO - 2014-10-07

This is reminding me of Outlast.

That is not a good thing.

FABIO - 2014-10-07

Wait, you hide in lockers from the big monster stalking you?

Oh my god it IS Outlast!

The Mothership - 2014-10-07

Does anybody remember the first Alien game that ran on DOS? It was an independent, illegal game that you had to find on WAREZ sites back in the 90s; it also fit on 6 1.5mb discs. It was set in the Nostromo, but you were Ripley with a pulse rifle, and there was no plot, you just had to find your way around in the almost complete dark from level to level.

Now that was a scary game; facehuggers just fucking had you for dead, you could never shoot them in time, and the lighting and maps were genuinely scary and easy to get lost in.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2014-10-07

There was an Aliens total conversion for Doom if that's what you're referring to.

The Mothership - 2014-10-07

naw, it wasn't that, although the engine was the same if I recall correctly.

Also I just looked into those IGN reviews and this looks like the sort of game that could pull me back into video games.

FABIO - 2014-10-07

I remember the first Alien game on Commodore 64. Played a lot like FTL's boarding party bits.

oddeye - 2014-10-07

I like that streets of rage style one with preds in it too.

StanleyPain - 2014-10-08

The original Alien game on C64 that Fabio is talking about was basically the proto-version of what this game is trying to be, albeit with a lot of the limitations of the time (shitty interface and graphics)

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-10-08

Stanley, you're thinking of the C-64 game Aliens (plural) which had some primitive FPS aspects to it.

The one Fabio is talking about is Alien (singular) which had a top-down interface:

The Mothership - 2014-10-08

I remember now, it was the Quake mod, shown in a let's play video here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuNR1_dV-TQ

StanleyPain - 2014-10-08

No, I mean the original Alien. Yes, I remember the Aliens game which had shooting and stuff....but I was referring to the original one which was the weird top-down one where you moved guys around the ship. That game scared the shit out of me as a kid.

oddeye - 2014-10-11

I played that one too, it was kind of like doom. I died about 30 seconds in EVERY TIME
