Well, we can be pretty sure nobody asks this person whether they're colorblind. It's kind of a given.

takewithfood - 2014-10-27

DC combined the Joker and Harley Quinn into one character? What will they think of next?

oddeye - 2014-10-27

Bit of 2 face in there too I guess, I don't know about your stupid comics and what-not.

oddeye - 2014-10-27

It can be hard but where I work, I try not to assign labels like man or woman to someone until they tell me themselves. We have a couple of people undergoing hormone therapy and while their name may be John they don't seem to like being called "sir" very much.

It's just the world I grew up in and hopefully it's changing for the better but I still can't enter a new patient in as anything other than male, female or unknown. WTF am I supposed to when someone tells me they are neither?

Meerkat - 2014-10-27

Maybe if it's a medical thing you need to enter the physical gender so the doctor/nurse knows how to deal with the necessities.

So they don't bring a douche to a cock fight.

Or have two entries, "brain" and "drain".

fluffy - 2014-10-27

I identify as neither (and have medically transitioned as much as is possible) and I love my doctor for actually respecting that. Chromosomes don't matter. The fact I used to have testes doesn't matter.

infinite zest - 2014-10-27

I think it's totally acceptable to ask that question given the field. When I was filling out job applications I'd always click the "wish not to say" button for race and gender, as it shouldn't make a difference (my name can go both ways) but if it's a physical issue, you sort of need to know. I used to live with a "M2F" who really didn't do much except for stuff and wear girl's clothes and still had a dick, and that's fine to identify as a she in my book. But if I had to take her to a hospital I'd like to think they'd ask. If you just ask the question though it's a party/office etc. foul.

infinite zest - 2014-10-27

whoops must've replied at the same time. I was referring to a big medical emergency or something and not a routine check-up. :)

fluffy - 2014-10-27

Generally for a medical emergency it's also not actually relevant, unless the emergency is "my dick got cut off" or "my period is bleeding way too much" or "I'm having a miscarriage."

I've spent some time in the ER due to complications from spironolactone when I was still taking that, but that issue is still not inherently gendered (aside from the question of "Why are you taking spironolactone?"). Of course that particular ER was in San Francisco's Castro district so they understood.

That guy - 2014-10-28

can't tell if you're for real pretty much ever, oddeye

oddeye - 2014-10-29

"Don't ask me if I'm real or a fake"

but seriously, it's very trying on everyone, myself included.

Scrimmjob - 2014-10-27

Sounds cool, I've never had my ass kicked by a Buhro before.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-10-27

Lucy looks sweet,
coz she dresses like a queen,
but she can kick like a mule,
it's a real mean team.

spikestoyiu - 2014-10-27

Male, female, or something else that has been invented in the last handful of years or whatever, I don't think this person really runs the risk of beating anyone up.

Gmork - 2014-10-27

People needed to ask?

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-10-27

so for Halloween, he's going as a bitch

misterbuns - 2014-10-27

Pillager - 2014-10-27

"chicks a dude" tag is an option.

But then so is Kickstand.

Binro the Heretic - 2014-10-27

So, is this like when skinheads are deliberately provocative towards non-whites, hoping they'll get nudged or pushed and "defend" themselves by curb-stomping their "attacker"?

ShiftlessRastus - 2014-10-27

No, it's more like a drag queen who is sick of the same stupid question from internet idiots with insecurity about non-binary gender expression, making a joke (that lots of queens have used) that will scare away said internet idiots while entertaining non-idiots.

ShiftlessRastus - 2014-10-27

On second read, you might have been joking (please have been joking).

namtar - 2014-10-27

Gurl, if that's the only question they're asking you count yourself lucky.

You look like you got jizzed on by a highlighter factory and the intro to Saved By the Bell.

fluffy - 2014-10-27

BTW, this should go without saying, but don't bother with the comments on the original site, unless you want to see a lot of transphobia and Silence of the Lambs jokes.

jimmyboblahey - 2014-10-27

When it said "this fist" I thought xir was going to take a different, awesomer path. -1 for disappointing me, you weird queer.

Prickly Pete - 2014-10-27

Is it offensive to say if you have a dick you're a man and if you have a vag you're a woman? That seems like a fair distinction to me. Am I out of touch? I don't see what's inappropriate about that system.

Pillager - 2014-10-28

Welcome the 21st century, oh cisgender privileged one.

fluffy - 2014-10-28

It isn't offensive to say if you have a dick you're probably a man and if you have a vulva you're probably a woman, because the vast majority of people so equipped do happen to fit into those categories.

However, it is offensive to paint everyone with those categorical, binary brush strokes, as well as actively harmful to people who are intersex, transitioning, or questioning.
