I don't think the graphics are next-gen either (and I'm not hating on the WiiU here). This looks like an upscaled PS2 or Dreamcast game.

infinite zest - 2014-11-13

I'd rather if it just looked like Really3D Sonic.

giygusattack - 2014-11-13

Has anyone told Ulillillia yet?

Nikon - 2014-11-13

Good point, this game might be fun for him.

blue vein steel - 2014-11-13

he's already reached 38,643 feet

yogarfield - 2014-11-13

Fuck, I had this Wii-Ulillillia joke locked and loaded.

EvilHomer - 2014-11-13

When I saw this video in the hopper, I assumed it was a Ulillillia video.

What's up with that fetish, anyway? I've got it, too - not nearly as bad as U, and I don't focus so much on the math or the seeing of numbers go up (numeric displays hurt the immersion, in my opinion), but JUMPING. JUMPING REALLY HIGH. IN A VIDEO GAME. Fuuuuucccckkk that's a rush.

Like, I used to be really big into The Elder Scrolls. And the one thing I think about when someone mentions Skyrim? No Acrobatics. That's it, that's all I can think about, no Jumping skill that you can frind for hours in order to jump higher. I mean, it was a decent game, if you like Oblivion stripped of all the creative flexibility in favour of slightly better graphics, but the jump height was so fucking puny, and there was no good way to fix it - I gave up on the game a month after it was released, mostly because I couldn't get over how upset I was over the jumping bullshit. I could spend days - literally, days, as in 24 hour chunks of time - making Jump enchanted equipment and bounding around Morrowind, just to see how far up I could get; *THAT* was the most fun I've had in pretty much any game ever. Or, like, the new Borderlands - I think it may be my most favoritest Borderlands yet. Not because it's the best one, but because you're on low-gravity moon and you can JUMP HIGH like a motherfucker! Sort of. It's not as high as I'd like, yet, but I only just started the game and I'm eager to find out if there are opportunities to hack the jump button. Oh, and don't even get me started on Counterstrike and the gravity server commands - long story short, I totally understand the appeal of Platform Masters! Hell, I might even play this Sonic game, although jumping with pausing and the jerky vocal repetition might kill the mood. For me, jumping isn't just about arriving at a point way up high in the air, the jump is also about the journey.

Anyway, what I want to know is, is there a *name* for video game jumping fetishists? Is there a whole community for that? I'd think there must be, but I've never encountered one.

Our journey, was a success!

twirling twirling twirling towards freedom?

dairyqueenlatifah - 2014-11-13

Is it even possible to make a decent 3D Sonic game? It seems like they're all just awful and broken, no matter who develops it. Like the franchise is just cursed.

infinite zest - 2014-11-13

Years ago I gave Sonic Adventure a 10 out of 10, and that's not just because I worked for a Sega website. I thought it was better than Mario 64, and there was something thrilling about seeing Sonic in 3D vs. 2D, like everything you wanted to see as a kid was visualized. I played through the Japanese version so the horrible voice acting had no effect.

I spent maybe 30 minutes playing Sonic Generations recently, which seemed to address some of the problems in a creative and self-conscious way: Sonic meets and converses with his 2D self and it's kind of like a love letter to fans of the original, and you can choose which way you want to go. But this just looks like a mess.

poorwill - 2014-11-13

Sonic Adventure sucks shit compared to Mario 64.

infinite zest - 2014-11-14

I disagree just because Mario didn't need to be anything special in the early days of 3D gaming, any more than Donkey Kong/bubsy/youname it needed to be. But Sonic was always marketed as fast, and therefore a fast (though sometimes glitchy but less than Mario 64) game was at the right place at the right time. Nobody wanted to see Mario flow down the sewer pipe in 3D the way that they wanted to see sonic spin through a loop.
