Baum actually paid for several Oz movies, which he himself directed. One gets the idea that Baum was more along the lines of Professor Marvel than Wizard of Oz. Before he was a writer, he tried to open a Chinese lantern and chocolate shop in a Kansas boom town. Then he found Theosophy and wrote this book.

poorwill - 2014-11-25 Correction/elaboration: More specifically it was Anthrosophy. Dunno where you're getting Thelemist connections, but it's an interesting idea.

cognitivedissonance - 2014-11-26 The Childlike Princess' real name was "Moon Child" and "Do As Thou Wilt" in German was on the reverse of the AURYN.

It's Larry Semon, not Sermon. I think you may have been a victim of autocorrect.
Semon is supposed to have been a bigger star than Chaplin and Keaton, back in the day. That's all I've ever known about him, but thanks to Google, I now know that his father was a vaudeville magican and he died while still in his thirties.
At just after the 1:00 mark, there's some serious good old timey racism. Makes you appreciate Chaplin's leftism, which prevented him from shitting up his movies with this kind of crap. It doesn't age well.
Next year will be the 100th Anniversary of The Birth of a Nation. Don't know why, but that seems worth mentioning,

The funny thing is it opens with Semon as an old man reading the real book to a little kid, I can only think of something like this...
