Before the police apologist brigade shows up, the back story on this is that the Utah Police have, for the past 2 months, been claiming that they basically pulled up to this guy, got out to talk to him, and then he immediately attacked them with the sword, and then they shot him. After which, as usual, the police basically cleared themselves of any wrong doing and didn't investigate any further.

This video doesn't show exactly what transpired, but it proves they are lying.

misterbuns - 2014-11-28

they said he attacked them (with his fake sword) but the autopsy revealed he was shot four times in the back oops. No consequence for murdering. No consequence for lying.

spikestoyiu - 2014-11-28

And at the risk of being labeled a "police apologist" (great strategy for a healthy debate, by the way), obviously the idea that he immediately attacked them is bogus. That's clear from the video. It's hard to tell, but a cop suddenly stops chasing him outside of the Panda Express. I wonder if he stopped running and turned around and that's when they shot him or if they stopped to shoot him while he was still running.

Maybe someone can attempt to answer this without losing their shit and calling me a bunch of names, but since his sword was fake, does anyone know of a reason why he would have run from them in the first place?

spikestoyiu - 2014-11-28

Scratch the bit about him turning around outside of the Panda Express. I didn't see the reply. Looks like they stopped running to shoot then, if the entry wounds are in the back.

animegurl1000 - 2014-11-28

"since his sword was fake, does anyone know of a reason why he would have run from them in the first place?"

He knew the cops would think his sword was real and would shoot him on the spot for it, perhaps?

SolRo - 2014-11-28

They killed him while he was running away.

There was only one fatal wound to his chest, it has an entry wound in his back and no exit wound.

Their excuse is that they had to kill the dangerous black because white people would be in danger if he ran away.

StanleyPain - 2014-11-28

It's also worth pointing out that in most states, fleeing is not justification for fatal force. For those who are still defending the Ferguson decision, the DA there told the grand jury that cops can kill someone for fleeing and cited a part of the legal code that had been ruled unconstitutional in the 80s.

misterbuns - 2014-11-28

spikes: it doesnt matter why he was running because that just justify shooting him.

but since youre curious: he was running because he had just been shot in the back. Seems kinda silly to run, but when you've just been shot for no reason I bet logic just goes right out the window. If only there were some way to control the use of force, but hey there isnt, right?

takewithfood - 2014-11-28

The police say they fired both before, and after Hunt rounded the corner of the Panda Garden there. One of them also reloaded his gun at some point.

Cena_mark - 2014-11-28

I've been undergoing some law enforcement training and it looks like the officers will easily get off from this. I don't know about other law enforcement groups, but I've learned deadly force is authorized when a suspect has a weapon, is fleeing, and you believe he may harm someone if he gets away. The cops lying about it may either call to differing standards, or just wanting to cover their asses further when they realized they killed a dude with a decorative sword.
We'll probably never know why he ran, but they're certainly creating a culture where more and more people will want to run from cops.

Bobonne - 2014-11-28

I'm guessing he ran because he was suddenly confronted with a bunch of cops pointing guns at him, and he panicked, never in his life having considered this situation happening to him, as he was a quiet nerd living in Utah.

Suddenly, his imminent death flashed before his eyes and he panicked and he tried to escape it. Which only sealed the fate he probably would've suffered anyway, considering how fast and thoroughly they gunned him down.

tesla_weapon - 2014-11-28

what was he cosplaying as? teenage gangster? its hardly aragorn or john snow, or even blade, but hey, being dressed as blade might have gotten him shot quicker. It's wrong, without a doubt, but so is labelling him as a cosplayer. I'd really like to know if they shot him first and asked questions later, because "Put the fucking sword down and get on the ground." seems like the sensible thing a police officer would do. It would be easily determined as his blood would be everywhere if he got shot before he ran away.

Bobonne - 2014-11-29

Seriously, that's totally a Mugen cosplay. I recognized it at a glance the first time I saw this story.

Mugen is one of the darker skinned and more afro-haired Japanese characters in anime, so I can understand a young black man into anime wanting to cosplay as him (being a character they can resemble more than most, I mean).

tesla_weapon - 2014-11-30

I plead ignorance. Just looks like he went for a walk on the way back from the sword shop.

misterbuns - 2014-11-28

To protect and to serve.

Old_Zircon - 2014-11-28

Well he DID get served, anyhow.

Robin Kestrel - 2014-11-28

Swords are weapons of mass destruction, fake swords even more so.

I heard that in the hands of a skilled black child, Fruit Stripe gum can be more deadly than anthrax.

Sanest Man Alive - 2014-11-28

Fake swords and fake guns are responsible for thousands of fake deaths in and around the home every year.

When will someone step up and pretend to regulate this madness? How many more imaginary friends and loved ones must we weep for?

misterbuns - 2014-11-28

can we stop giving guns to man babies who are deathly afraid of children, toys and children with toys.

Maggot Brain - 2014-11-28

Stop killing our black, autistic youth. I know that sounds snarky but I'm being serious.

ashtar. - 2014-11-28

He was obviously readying a spirit bomb.

oddeye - 2014-11-28

You are a fucking idiot. He has to stand still to charge that. OMFG!!

Nominal - 2014-11-28

Swords will sit there while bullets cut you wide open!

Old_Zircon - 2014-11-28

Remember back in the 80s when that kid got shot by cops while he was playing laser tag in the park after sundown? Remember how it seemed shocking at the time? It seems kind of quaint now. I mean, it wasn't even broad daylight and was probably an honest mistake.

Nominal - 2014-11-28

Yes, but that case was the fault of satanists.

Binro the Heretic - 2014-11-28

Utah allows open carry of firearms, by the way.

White boys going out for tacos with their AK-47s are fine, but black kids dressed as Afro Samurai must die.

Sanest Man Alive - 2014-11-29

What, you think they'd tolerate some white boy waving a Kalashnikov around? Fuck no, he might be one of those Chexian rebels we keep hearing about, or some other kind of Communist! Now, if it was some strapping young jackbooted fellow with an M-4 or possibly an FN, why that's just a patriot going about his civic duty. Best pay him no mind.

oddeye - 2014-11-28

All stupid joking aside, he DID run from an Officer of the Law which constitutes resisting arrest (as per the constitution) and IS punishable by being LAWFULLY slain.

Regardless of anything that happened before, he CHOSE to run from the Police, the very people who were their solely to protect and serve him, and the two Officers in question had NO CHOICE but to UPHOLD THE LAW and shoot him several times in the back.

Case CLOSED, no wrong doing of any kind.

Binro the Heretic - 2014-11-28

Fuck you. Just fuck you.

Even if you're just trolling, fuck you.

There is no other response.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-11-29

Yeah. You're a piece of shit oddeye. You're always so opinionated, like gmork or old Cena_Mark but without any redeeming qualities.

oddeye - 2014-11-29

Having an opinion only makes you opinionated if your opinion is wrong, which, in my opinion, it never is.
