Tina Belcher ruined me for butts. Can't think about butts now without thinking about Tina Belcher saying "Butts".

Back in middle school I learned to draw (clothed) boobs from the pages of Berkeley Breathed's sketchbooks that were reproduced in one or another of the Bloom County books.
Mostly animes and my dad's old rockabilly Good Girl artbooks for me.

Cartoonists draw butts like how comedians tell The Aristocrats. Trust me. Alcohol and competitive butt drawing.

I was not expecting that look. I should have.
Don't be such assholes
I have mixed feelings about the look. He is a very good artist (from what I've seen here), but the trouble is, he *knows* he is a very good artist. He strikes me as one of those "diva artistes", precocious fellows who try a little too hard to get noticed. I, personally, prefer artists who inhabit the other end of the spectrum: the miserable, socially-anxious Kafka-artists, the sort of people that Ulillillia would wind up being if he were inclined towards Sonic the Hedgehog webcomics, rather than jumpy-grindy video games. Feel free to disagree with me on this, but give me Harvey Pekar over Crumb any day.
For me, his speech patterns were throwing me off; the cool turns of phrases, the laid-back accent that screamed upper-middle class art school guy. Mr Tran-Caffee seemed to be enjoying his work too much, seemed a little too confident in the value end-product. The Look was more just the inevitable conclusion we'd known was coming all along, rather than the sudden shocking twist that throws us out of our seats.
It's the mustache, I think, that is most difficult for me to come to grips with. I personally hate mustaches, even fancy, flamboyant mustaches (weird musatches are better than your typical John Holmes/ gay fireman staches, but are FAR less cool than a nice, thin, shibui-stache like the Errol Flynn). His mustache; on the one hand, it's evocative of Salvador Dali. On the other hand, *it's evocative of Salvador Dali*. Now Dali was the patron saint of douchebag artists, and I am willing to bet that Mr Dax (if indeed I am correct about his archetype) is both aware of, and inordinately pleased with, that connection.
His dress is a nice color, however; I think it complements his complexion.
I did. I had more to say, specifically about his anatomical drawing presentation, and how it reminded me of one of the bits from Dr Fegg's Encyclopeadia of All World Knowledge, where Dr Fegg cruelly mocked precisely the sort of thing that Mr Tran-Caffee was doing. (FIRST draw a skeleton, THEN draw a bunch of organs, THEN draw muscles over the organs, then erase everything and draw a horse or whatever)
But I did not want to make a social mistake by overstaying my welcome, so I cut things short. :(
