I hate this myth so much. There's been a bunch of movies based on it (Limitless, Lucy) lately that I refuse to see.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-12-04

Yeah but those movies are fun, at least. I'd rather watch those than some boring run of the mill gangster movie.

Old_Zircon - 2014-12-04

I hate this myth in general, but in this case the guy misjudged his venue. This is a TED talk. This audience uses 15% of their brain, tops.

Coax_Current - 2014-12-04

I'm glad this video exists. May I stop running into people that need to view it.

I haven't seen Limitless, but Lucy is a ton of fun just for how much Luc Besson essentially mocks the premise. It's pretty clear from the film that he thinks the 10% thing is just as fucking dumb as you do.

Lucy was a bad movie and I'm angry at you for tricking me into seeing it.

I love that this video also debunks the "raw foods are healthier" fad just as a casual thing.

SolRo - 2014-12-04

it doesn't really (not that I care either way).

cooking food is a huge benefit when we could barely scrape together enough tubers, berries and dead birds/rats to keep from starving...not to mention killing off parasites and bacteria.

Today it doesn't matter if you use more calories digesting raw food, since you can easily get even more raw food without having to spend 16 hours foraging for it.

Old_Zircon - 2014-12-04

Raw foods are healthier because they do not include Mountain Dew, Cool Ranch or The Baconator.

Seriously, if you ignore the questionable claims by its advocates and just think of it as an incredibly simple way to eliminate almost all of the worst things you can eat, it's a pretty good idea, and I've seen people who approach it from that angle make huge improvements to their general health in less than a year. Because what it really boils down to is "eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and some nuts, and cut out all processed foods and refined sugars."

Old_Zircon - 2014-12-04

Of course Raw Food lifestylers are completely nuts, but that's a whole different thing.

As far as I'm concerned, lifestyle diets like that are often just a socially acceptable variety of eating disorder.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-12-04

Every single raw foodist I have ever met was a trust fund baby or had rich parents or in one instance was some blond dude raised in Kenya. He drank cow blood whenever he could. I don't know if that counts as raw food.

SolRo - 2014-12-05

Cow blood mixed with milk is drunk in Africa, I don't remember in which countries though.

Sanest Man Alive - 2014-12-05

Did someone piss in the dictionary when I wasn't looking? Y'all seem to think "raw food" no longer means "utterly uncooked and unprepared" but rather whatever "organic" used to mean before marketing firms obliterated all meaning of that word. Quit being junior marketers!

Cooking is awesome. Cooking meat that was raised free-range, without constant hormone/antibiotic cocktails, without feeding their remaindered dead back to the living to cut costs, is awesome. You use shitty processed-to-hell-and-back Tyson chicken to cook with, yes, it's going to taste gross AND be worse for you than chicken that wasn't raised in a hormone-steeped factory farm.
