I don't think a fur suit mask would provide any more protection than a bandanna over one's face. Its not like a gas mask or an SCBA. Being on a cutter I've been trained in fighting fires and toxic gasses. I would not mess with either in a fur suit.
The tragic thing about this is the long lasting affects of toxic gas. It can wreck people for a long time.

Fursuit masks would do fuck-all for protecting against chlorine gas, but I suppose it's possible (indeed, even likely) that some furries have specially designed pro-masks made to fit over top of their fursuits, for fetish purposes if nothing else. That said, I highly doubt that any such mask is actually CB-capable; they'd be for show, not for function.

Still, it'll be interesting to see if any enterprising furries decide to show up to their next Con in fursuit-ified MOPP gear.

Actually, that would be a great idea! I've never been in a fursuit, but I've heard that they're just as hot and miserable as a mop suit. It might be interesting to use MOPP gear as the basis for a fursuit; glue some fur and maybe some wolf ears to the thing, and voila!

All the excess fur and shit would probably make it hell to decontaminate in the event of an actual NBC incident, but since it's main purpose would be fun, with maybe that once-in-a-lifetime save-your-ass from a rogue terrorist attack at FurCon, I think it could honestly work out very, very nicely.

It's really disturbing to read some of the reactions, and I don't just mean the trolls, I mean even the well-wishers. Checking a few furry and brony forums, many people seem to have lept on this idea of the incident being some kind of "hate attack", whipping them into an ironically hateful frenzy against... I dunno, hyomans? Scoffers? Anyone other than themselves?

I get that it's human nature to hate outsiders and look for witches whenever something happens that seems beyond our control, but still, it never ceases to amaze me how people who know, on a rhetorical level, that cultural "hate" is a bad thing, can have so little capacity for self-reflection.

Anyway, some of these individuals are claiming that a few furries died. I can find no media reports to confirm this, so I'm guessing (hoping?) it's just internet people over-reacting.

I suspect some internal drama, too. Furries stopped being a major Internet hate-sponge years ago, and I doubt some nutcase would go this far when there are Illuminati Repticops and Unitarian Stormtroopers to target.

Portal of Evil is more of a community than an idea. A lot of people have been on PoE/PoE-N/PoeTV/OMM for a decade or more. Do you really find it surprising that people have grown up in that time? It would be horribly depressing if they didn't.

Times have changed. Back in 2004 furries were new, scary, and hated. Nowadays we've all been desensitized to weird stuff on the internet and have come to see furries as a benign community who are just a bunch of people doing their own thang. Compare to our changed view of furries to society's changed perception of gay rights in the last decade.

Hi Homer, I did see the puking Pitbull, from the Pug bath post from a few days ago. Those look good and realistic, and I like how you use different analog drawing materials, rather than Paint Shop or pencil and pen for all of them.

I have to get my art pages up, something I keep barking about. I want to make it a project and do too much I think, tracing my history, so it's a job that gets put off. Still, I think it would be a worthwhile addition to my site when I do it. I do mainly pen, and now mostly use digital.

I think a big part of this mentality is that many wouldn't call it a mere fandom, but a lifestyle. I don't know why they'd see themselves beyond other fandoms or cosplayers. Perhaps its that otherkin type mentality they'er not just dudes who wear costumes, but rather the spirits of wolves and foxes trapped in primate bodies.

I think Cena mark has a good take on it, it deals in a 'fursona' and that can be a very personal thing to many fuzzies, though some say they're just having fun as mascots.

The social aspect of Furry can also be very powerful too, it's often a first social system that they have after family, and it's like a new Furry family to many.

Back in 2003 NCIS did an episode about a murder within the furry community.

The CSI:Furry episode was thought to be over-dramatic, showing stereotypes and amplifying them.

Yeah, the CSI episode caused no end of drama, and for awhile the paws-down best way to troll a fur was to tell them you knew what they were like, as you watched CSI. I think some furries are *still* mad about that show.

Furries have received attention from the mainstream media off and on over the years, ranging from half-assed news reports about conventions to furry references on American Dad to that fursuit stuff John K did for Miley Cyrus last year. However, to the best of my knowledge, this is the first time something potentially significant has happened to them.
