Gmork - 2014-12-07

What kind of fucking psychopath would want to kill someone based on their preferences or sexual proclivities?

Oh, right. Psychopaths.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-12-07

Well sociopaths often take to killing animals in their younger years. So it kind of makes sense.

The guy at 1:20 actually has a perfect cartoon voice.

Albuquerque Halsey - 2014-12-07

That's Uncle Kage

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Conway

"Samuel Charles Conway[3] (born June 4, 1965 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania[4]) is an American researcher in the pharmaceutical, biomedical and agrochemical fields of organic chemistry. He holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from Dartmouth College.

Outside the scientific community, Conway is better known as Uncle Kage /ˈkɑːɡeɪ/ and is chairman and chief organizer of Anthrocon, the largest furry convention in the world.[5][6][7] He is a published author, and has acted as a volunteer emergency coordinator, entertainer, and auctioneer."

Nominal - 2014-12-07

They say the earliest sign of a psychopath is animal abuse.

SolRo - 2014-12-07

Sectarian conflict or external attack? I wouldn't be surprised if it's the first.

Dib - 2014-12-09

Police have released this sketch of the suspect. http://cdn.instructables.com/F7D/85Q1/GJ2838GI/F7D85Q1GJ2838GI.MED IUM.jpg

gravelstudios - 2014-12-07

The reporter can barely get through this with a straight face.

TheOtherCapnS - 2014-12-07

I wonder if chlorine gas would do anything to get rid of the smell of a furry con...

casualcollapse - 2023-04-17

I think it actually would

Pillager - 2014-12-07

Damn, Fursecution is a real thing now. I wonder if gas masks fit under their animal visages?

Cena_mark - 2014-12-07

So very evil.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-12-07

Wouldn't their masks provide a little protection already?

CONSPIRACY ADDITIONAL: In fact, fursuiters would be the most likely to survive such an attack, so it might have been one of them doing it to attack the "mundanes," knowing his fursuited brethren would escape unharmed!

TROLL ADDITIONAL: Besides, it's not like the insides of those suits isn't that far from enduring a chemical gas attack in the first place.

Cena_mark - 2014-12-07

I don't think a fur suit mask would provide any more protection than a bandanna over one's face. Its not like a gas mask or an SCBA. Being on a cutter I've been trained in fighting fires and toxic gasses. I would not mess with either in a fur suit.
The tragic thing about this is the long lasting affects of toxic gas. It can wreck people for a long time.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-08

Fursuit masks would do fuck-all for protecting against chlorine gas, but I suppose it's possible (indeed, even likely) that some furries have specially designed pro-masks made to fit over top of their fursuits, for fetish purposes if nothing else. That said, I highly doubt that any such mask is actually CB-capable; they'd be for show, not for function.

Still, it'll be interesting to see if any enterprising furries decide to show up to their next Con in fursuit-ified MOPP gear.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-08

Actually, that would be a great idea! I've never been in a fursuit, but I've heard that they're just as hot and miserable as a mop suit. It might be interesting to use MOPP gear as the basis for a fursuit; glue some fur and maybe some wolf ears to the thing, and voila!

All the excess fur and shit would probably make it hell to decontaminate in the event of an actual NBC incident, but since it's main purpose would be fun, with maybe that once-in-a-lifetime save-your-ass from a rogue terrorist attack at FurCon, I think it could honestly work out very, very nicely.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-08

Man, we should totally buy some MOPP suits from a survivalist store and turn them into ,000 a pop, military-grade anti-terrorist fursuits. I wish I had some skill in garmenteering, because that'd be a killer money making opportunity.

infinite zest - 2014-12-07

Fur fest and dog show.

Crab Mentality - 2014-12-07

Fuck that reporter for making fun of them. There's a time and a place.

glasseye - 2014-12-07

Indeed. This is very much not funny.

I mean... furries. But yeah. Chlorine gas attack. Not OK.

ShiftlessRastus - 2014-12-07

Goddammit Andrea, this is no time for puns.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-07

I've been checking Reddit to keep abreast of developing news about this attack. So far there's nothing new, just a bunch of speculation and trolling, but I have learned a lot about Tumbles the Stairdragon.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-07

^ Not meant to be a reply.

TeenerTot - 2014-12-08

Seriously. Not cool, reporter.

MacGyver Style Bomb - 2014-12-07

It's easy to suspect that this was the actions of some internet psychopath who decided to take his hate of furries to an all new, awful level... but with my history of working for various sci-fi/gaming/anime conventions, I personally suspect the possibility of a former, disgruntled staffer doing this. I've seen how stupid that can get.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-07

Mentally unstable furry would be my guess, but it's pointless to speculate until more facts come to light.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-07

It's really disturbing to read some of the reactions, and I don't just mean the trolls, I mean even the well-wishers. Checking a few furry and brony forums, many people seem to have lept on this idea of the incident being some kind of "hate attack", whipping them into an ironically hateful frenzy against... I dunno, hyomans? Scoffers? Anyone other than themselves?

I get that it's human nature to hate outsiders and look for witches whenever something happens that seems beyond our control, but still, it never ceases to amaze me how people who know, on a rhetorical level, that cultural "hate" is a bad thing, can have so little capacity for self-reflection.

Anyway, some of these individuals are claiming that a few furries died. I can find no media reports to confirm this, so I'm guessing (hoping?) it's just internet people over-reacting.

Kid Fenris - 2014-12-07

I suspect some internal drama, too. Furries stopped being a major Internet hate-sponge years ago, and I doubt some nutcase would go this far when there are Illuminati Repticops and Unitarian Stormtroopers to target.

Kabbage - 2014-12-07

Give us some deets, MacGyver!

dairyqueenlatifah - 2014-12-07

If I know furries (and thanks to years of PoeRED, I do) this was someone's botched attempt to carry out their fetish.

spikestoyiu - 2014-12-07

POETV: Where all cops need to die but I swear to God you better not make fun of sick furries.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2014-12-07

PoeTV used to be furry-hate central back in the day. We bashed them relentlessly. Laughing at the insane and the autistic was a daily routine as well.

Fast forward to 2014, where a PoeTV cries if you laugh at a schizo who thinks she's married to Letterman and cracking obvious jokes about a gas leak at a furry convention is forbidden.

;___;

spikestoyiu - 2014-12-07

The E still stands for "evil", right?

OH NO A BUNCH OF PEOPLE WHO NEED TO DRESS LIKE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL MASCOTS IN ORDER TO GET HARD DON'T FEEL WELL. CUT IT OUT GUYS

asian hick - 2014-12-07

Portal of Evil is more of a community than an idea. A lot of people have been on PoE/PoE-N/PoeTV/OMM for a decade or more. Do you really find it surprising that people have grown up in that time? It would be horribly depressing if they didn't.

Mental illness and bashing furries was hilarious when I was 16. I'm not anymore.

Sudan no1 - 2014-12-07

When I was using PoE red, the motto was that PoEtards were "assholes with hearts of gold," aka we might be assholes but we weren't 4chan level assholes. I always liked it that way. *shrug*

Cena_mark - 2014-12-07

Times have changed. Back in 2004 furries were new, scary, and hated. Nowadays we've all been desensitized to weird stuff on the internet and have come to see furries as a benign community who are just a bunch of people doing their own thang. Compare to our changed view of furries to society's changed perception of gay rights in the last decade.

MacGyver Style Bomb - 2014-12-07

We kinda draw the line at attempted mass murder.

Crab Mentality - 2014-12-07

POE-RED had the general rule of "Look, but don't touch". See the site, bask in the horror, but don't leave comments and such. I always saw it as a "Prime Directive" thing. You let people just have their own crazy, and do their own crazy.

Making fun of people is great fun. I don't think people being chlorine gassed, whoever it is, is funny.

Spaceman Africa - 2014-12-07

I'm pretty interested in finding out who had the motive and means to do this sort of thing at a furry convention.

Gmork - 2014-12-07

Cops that murder people and furries attending a convention... what a completely level comparison, spike. Bravo.

poorwill - 2014-12-07

Nobody says 'fag' anymore either. What a world.

Spaceman Africa - 2014-12-07

wait why did i reply to this

Shoebox Joe - 2014-12-08

@Spaceman Africa. The same reason that DairyQueenLatifah and Spikestoyiu needed to comment. A tiny person climbed into one of the many pores in your skin, thumbs perpetually and permanently up as it uses its remaining fingers to pull open the miniscule orifice and as it climbs inside.

It murmurs and mumbles as it nests cozy in the tiny hole. "Atta boy. Believe in yourself. Do what you believe in."

Though, the ones in Spike and DQL are obviously dressed as cartoon animals as they say the exact same thing.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-08

You can still call people fags and you can still hate furries. It was never cool to actually want fags and furries dead, however. The only time you laugh at a dead furry is if he dies in a hunting accident, or of autoerotic asphyxiation.

As for cops vs furries, get back to me on that one when furries start owning tanks and shooting unarmed kids.

Shoebox Joe - 2014-12-08

After re-reading this comment thread I now realize that I have one too.

I'll name him Gary.

spikestoyiu - 2014-12-08

When Gmork tries to burn you, you know you're doing God's work.

If all of these weirdos had died, A) they would have died in their costumes (likely with raging boners), and they would have wanted it that way. And B) it probably would have been kind of a bummer. But everyone's going to be fine.

If we can't live in a world where "chlorine gas attack on a furry convention" isn't at least amusing as a word salad (again, everyone's still alive), then I don't even know any more.

Shoebox Joe - 2014-12-08

Spike, I don't understand where you're going with this.

Do you need a fluff?

asian hick - 2014-12-08

I love that the hill you've chosen to die on is fighting for your right to act like an 3dgy 16 year old, making fun of people that are different than you for almost dying. Because E is for Evil. It certainly is.

spikestoyiu - 2014-12-08

I know the absolute worst thing you can suggest here is that someone is trying too hard to be 2 EDGY 4 U, but I didn't even make a joke at anyone's expense. Sorry! I'm just shocked that the userbase of a website who has wished death on people and who routinely makes fun of people with bizarre fetishes as well as the mentally ill has just now decided to unite and say "no, making fun of furries is just TOO FAR and we will not stand for it. They had to go to a hospital, for Christ's sake!"

You can say every "exhibit" here is "different". So what? Who's that dude who reviews diapers and old radio equipment or whatever? Cool, he's different, better not make any jokes!

EvilHomer - 2014-12-08

Again, spikes, there's a difference between "making fun of" and "wishing death upon". I can't speak for everyone, but I myself have never seriously wished death upon any exhibits - well, maybe Dragonguyver, but that was only because he raped his nieces.

Think of it like the Yankees and the Red Sox. Sure, Red Sox fans hate Yankees fans, Yankees fans hate Red Sox fans. They all savour drama and love to see bad shit happen to the other side.

But there were no parties in Boston on 9/11. No Yankees fans celebrated the Marathon Bombing. Why would they?!

Anyway, we've got plenty of cool furries here, too. Boomer, John Holmes Motherfucker, Gmork probably. At the end of the day, are we all so very different?

poorwill - 2014-12-08

'Gmork probably'. I laughed, thank you.

Shoebox Joe - 2014-12-09

You have to be making a joke to be Dark and 3Dg3y?

I thought that was just late 90's internet culture.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-12-09

We've grown up a lot in the past 1.5 decades.

yogarfield - 2014-12-07

This.. is real? I'm going to go gather my thoughts.

garcet71283 - 2014-12-07

Well, given the furries fascination with Nazism in general, I am guessing the furry equivalent of the Gleiwitz incident.

badideasinaction - 2014-12-07

Fuuuuuuck.

I staff cons and this is one of those nightmare scenarios - whether this was intended as an attack at the con or just someone being a moron, these events have a lot of people together and often not a lot of trained people in the event of a problem and it's becoming a question of when one of these things is going to have deaths. Add in the often not-so-healthy social functions of the people that are attracted to these and it's kinda a question of "when" not "if".

Sexy Duck Cop - 2014-12-07

Things got a little FURRY when a chlorine bomb left 19 people hospitalized. It was quite the HAIRY situation for their respioratory tracts developed painful, swollen blisters that would've asphyxiated them if not for some COOL CATS that called 9/11. BOW OW!

Local news anchors: The lowest rung om the media totem pole, yet still aggressively smug.

craptacular - 2014-12-07

i'm more embarrassed than anything else. furry conventions shouldn't be featured in the news.

The Mothership - 2014-12-07

Agreed.

Nominal - 2014-12-07

Oh my god I skipped over this on the front page twice because I thought it was a joke.

Boomer The Dog - 2014-12-07

I didn't go to this, but my friend Ric was there and they all had to wait outside of the hotel for 3 hours, first in the parking garage, then in the convention center space for the rest of the time. I think it was the biggest adventure he had at the con.

No answers as to who set off the bomb.

Boom

EvilHomer - 2014-12-08

I'm glad your friend is OK. Does he have any footage from the Con?

EvilHomer - 2014-12-08

Also, sort of off-topic, but I made a couple new pictures that I think you might enjoy. http://fav.me/d88k44e is a doggie picture, based on the puking sex pitbull of Youtube fame. http://fav.me/d894yb7 is something I started today, inspired by this incident.

Boomer The Dog - 2014-12-08

He did plenty of videos there, but has no You Tube to put it. I'm not sure how much he has of the emergency stuff, I know I'd have been rolling my camera when exiting with the masses in the evacuation and things like that.

Hi Homer, I did see the puking Pitbull, from the Pug bath post from a few days ago. Those look good and realistic, and I like how you use different analog drawing materials, rather than Paint Shop or pencil and pen for all of them.

I have to get my art pages up, something I keep barking about. I want to make it a project and do too much I think, tracing my history, so it's a job that gets put off. Still, I think it would be a worthwhile addition to my site when I do it. I do mainly pen, and now mostly use digital.

Boomer

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-12-07

I was looking at posting someone linked to elsewhere on Tumblr. There was at least one person upset at the jokes being aimed at this, which is fair enough.

But then they said someone "tried to commit genocide."

This is what gets me about most fandoms, but furries seem to be the worst about it: Being a furry isn't a race. You cannot commit actual genocide against furries. If you think it is, there's something very, very wrong with you AND your fursona.

Cena_mark - 2014-12-07

I think a big part of this mentality is that many wouldn't call it a mere fandom, but a lifestyle. I don't know why they'd see themselves beyond other fandoms or cosplayers. Perhaps its that otherkin type mentality they'er not just dudes who wear costumes, but rather the spirits of wolves and foxes trapped in primate bodies.

Boomer The Dog - 2014-12-07

I think Cena mark has a good take on it, it deals in a 'fursona' and that can be a very personal thing to many fuzzies, though some say they're just having fun as mascots.

The social aspect of Furry can also be very powerful too, it's often a first social system that they have after family, and it's like a new Furry family to many.

Boomer

Shoebox Joe - 2014-12-08

"But then they said someone "tried to commit genocide.""

The optimist in me says this person didn't know what word to use, whether or not due to or a product of a disability, and simply pulled out something similar in concept.

spicediver - 2014-12-07

Would this be the first time that furries have ever had mainstram news coverage? Just wonderin

Cena_mark - 2014-12-07

Back in 2003 NCIS did an episode about a murder within the furry community.

Boomer The Dog - 2014-12-07

The CSI:Furry episode was thought to be over-dramatic, showing stereotypes and amplifying them.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-08

Yeah, the CSI episode caused no end of drama, and for awhile the paws-down best way to troll a fur was to tell them you knew what they were like, as you watched CSI. I think some furries are *still* mad about that show.

Furries have received attention from the mainstream media off and on over the years, ranging from half-assed news reports about conventions to furry references on American Dad to that fursuit stuff John K did for Miley Cyrus last year. However, to the best of my knowledge, this is the first time something potentially significant has happened to them.

chumbucket - 2014-12-08

The paranoid expressions on a lot of the furry masks is very appropriate for this.
