John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-26

I spent Christmas and the four days before it in bed, dealing with some vile upper respiratory bullshit. And this is what kept me occupied during that time. It's basically a Christmas windup toy. For those of you who don't know, that's me, and that's how many cats I live with.

I made another version when youtube put the copyright clampdown on the Black Belles, using music from the Free Music Archive. I think it may actually be better. The artists are called "The Polish Ambassador" and it's some kind of electronic dance music.

Merry Christmas, Everybody. I think you'll agree, it's been a banner year for evil.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-26

They all look like the same cat...?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-26

Yes. They are all the same cat.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-26

Oh, they're not even your cats. I thought you meant you made the video with your cats, but apparently you outsourced all their jobs.

fluffy - 2014-12-26

if they are all the same cat then how are there more than one of them HUH smart guy?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-26

>> For those of you who don't know, that's me, and that's how many cats I live with.

See what I did there? I was actually expecting Homer to make a federal case over the fact that no one is actually clobbered.

EvilHomer - 2014-12-27

I assumed the lack of clobbering was an artistic choice, your way of protesting NASA or saying that you don't believe in the possibility of Martian life.

Love the dancing cats.

Boomer The Dog - 2014-12-26

That is a good track, I like heavy garage rock like that, with a bit o' glam.

Good layering, if that's what it's called, something like green screen.

I haven't learned how to do that yet, but Homer showed me where people have cropped out animated Ponies from MLP and put them into different scenes, and we thought I could do it with live action Here's Boomer shows.

Generally speaking, greenscreen is my thang. I usually use it a lot.

But not this time. The dancing cat meme is an old gif, probably dating back to the early days of 4chan. It consists of a simple sequence of just 3 images in a cycle with 1 image used twice: abcb

I wanted the santa figure to sync up with the cats, and the cats to sync up with each other, so most of the layering was done by editing the individual frames in GIMP, I used ffDiaporama (a slideshow program, these are all Linux applications) to create a cycling of frames over and over at one frame per second (usually four frames, once 12) and then I'd use Kdenlive to speed up the slideshow, in this case by a factor of 5.5. The only part to use greenscreen was the sky in the background

fluffy - 2014-12-26

gifsicle and imagemagick can do those things too, and might be easier to deal with for longer loops, especially if you just want to script everything. And of course Photoshop has animation/video support now as well.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-26

I've done some interesting stuff with imagemagick.

Boomer The Dog - 2014-12-28

I've used animated gifs in videos before, Vegas will take them. The only thing that stuck out for me is that I think the cats in the back should be smaller to work better in the scene. You could have some standing behind rocks if you can crop out a section of rock and bring it to the foreground.

Stoners was cool, lots to follow visually, then the resolution dropped. Let's Cut This made me laugh, especially when the beard was going back on, and then multiple shaves at the same time.. :)

I liked the green screened background, adding an aquarium.. I've tried Kdenlive on Ubuntu, though probably 4-5 years ago, I'll bet it's a lot better now too.

One of my blogs uses ImageMagick for resizing posted pictures to thumbnails, and when I was on WebTV in the late 1990s, we had to load the images into an on line version of ImageMagick to work with them.

Do you take requests?

Boomer The Dog - 2014-12-28

Maybe he could do Ponies for you. I want to learn this cropping so I can put Here's Boomer in other scenes.

I was thinking a version of Caramelldansen, only with JHM and Boxxy! Caramelldansen is a very basic animation, too; simple versions can be made with no more than four frames, same as John's cats.

Boomer The Dog - 2014-12-28

Hi Homer, now I get it, it's just that you're so associated with MLP lately that I forgot it could be something else.. :)

I watched some Caramelldansen Weed with Hobnose in the late 00s, and liked the version with the Huskies waving their paws and tail wagging.
