Needs to be updated with what we know of FNAF2.

Scrimmjob - 2015-01-25

This game theory guy fucking stinks!

infinite zest - 2015-01-25

His voice is annoying, but it is an interesting theory.

fluffy - 2015-01-25

This dude's theories are all way overwrought, overblown, bullshit. I've seen way too many of his half-baked videos and I'm not about to watch more.

Chocolate Jesus - 2015-01-25

Yeeech.

NewHeavenSockman - 2015-01-25

the true plot: a guy wanted to make money and realized that mixing furries, wacky 90's nostalgia, and jump scares would make alot of money

Gmork - 2015-01-25

I feel sorry for your shitty taste.

NewHeavenSockman - 2015-01-25

oh yeah i forgot that the mixture would also garner alot of tedious fans

infinite zest - 2015-01-25

I thought I'd really like this game and it was like 2.99 on the app store so I thought what the heck. It's kinda fun to play on the bus, and I could tell the person next to me was watching because she'd jump as soon as the mascots came out. But it's really not that scary, which is supposed to be the point. It's about as cliche as the old slow-walk towards the door in horror movies. OH WAIT HE'S NOT BEHIND THE DOOR HE'S BEHIND YOU! In FNaF the lights flicker and you have a pretty good idea about what's about to happen.

The only game that's ever scared me was Resident Evil 1 with the dogs. I feel like my $ went to a good place because I like to support indie games, but next time, make it scary. Oh and put in gameplay while you're at it.

EvilHomer - 2015-01-25

Dogs was the scariest jump-scare of any game ever. Mainly because you weren't expecting it AT ALL.

Most jump scares fall flat because they get set up in such a way that you know they're coming. I haven't played FNAF, but I did play Nighttrap, and that was the way the horror was done in that game.

StanleyPain - 2015-01-25

The only game to truly scare me to the point where I had to stop playing for awhile was Fatal Frame. Dear lord, that game.

infinite zest - 2015-01-25

There are a few good ones as the nights progress, like you check one camera and the robot's there, check another one and come back and he's not anymore, and go to the next camera and see a fast moving robot running down the hallway right towards you, but there's no sound. Those are good and suspenseful. They kind of remind me of playing Friday The 13th for NES, which still kinda scares me, because all of a sudden Jason's just right in front of you.

But yeah as far as the deaths go, it's painfully obvious, right down to the music box music. You know in about 5 to 10 seconds, you're gonna be spooked. My experience might have been different though, since I watched a few LPs before I played it myself. I haven't played Nighttrap but I imagine it has to take a little bit of time to load said horror scenes.

EvilHomer - 2015-01-25

Fatal Frame was terrifying! My vote for scariest game overall, though, is probably FEAR (the first one). STALKER and Thief (Shalebridge Cradle) also had their moments, as did all of the Resident Evils up until 4 (4 was when it stopped being scary and just turned into a monster-themed action game)

EvilHomer - 2015-01-25

Nighttrap is goddawful. You miss a lot of the good bits simply because there's a lot of cameras but only one of you, so half the time you don't even know something's gone wrong until your commander starts bitching you out for letting the vampires murder all the co-eds.

I have no more information on FNAF than a chipmunk's bounty of bananas, but I have been seeing a lot of FNAF crossover grimdark pony art lately, usually consisting of a pony popping up and smiling at you with big sharp teeth. That's more than most FMV games, so at least the Freddy guys are trying, I guess.

infinite zest - 2015-01-25

It's short-lived fun, especially on iOS. People told me it's spookier on CPU but I disagree. Something about the controls works really well with iOS and it's short enough that it just feels like something to do and not immerse yourself completely like a console horror game. Plus it's cheap if you have a couple bucks in your pocket.

I'm actually thinking about getting the sequel; apparently it's a lot spookier and is also 3 bux.

FABIO - 2015-01-25

The problem is that it supposedly relies on the tension of you checking cameras as the mascots creep around, but you quickly learn that the cameras are useless and that checking them gets you killed. In fact, reacting to anything at all is a waste of time. Not only can the game be beaten by mindlessly repeating a rote pattern with no regard to any cues, but it becomes mandatory in the later levels.

It's decent if all you're expecting is spending for a quick laugh at your friend jumping and you're bored with all the free scary demon face popup games. As an actual game it's just crappy design. There are no clear rules and each mascot breaks them in some way, so you either give up and quit after 10 minutes or you go read a FAQ which kills the whole point of playing an atmospheric horror game.

It's a shame because the author occasionally stumbles on some good game design (The Desolate Room) and his art is always fantastic.

infinite zest - 2015-01-25

Or at least that's what Keanu Reeves' head told me..

FABIO - 2015-01-25

I haven't played the sequel but I haven't heard great things. Everyone says they replaced the Foxy/Pirate Cove mechanic with something more annoying: constantly having to wind up a music box to keep one mascot asleep.

Other than that it falls into the exact same pitfall the first game did. The camera mechanic is completely useless and the only way to win is a boring rote pattern.

Someone made this .gif that sums up both games

FABIO - 2015-01-25

And YES Fatal Frame is up there with the original Silent Hill for best horror game of time!

Fuck though did they fuck up all the sequels. The combat in them is a shallow shell of the original and the 3rd game keeps taking you out of the haunted dream world into your boring apartment, sort of like an inverse Silent Hill 4 (where the apartment was the only good part).

I think they made one or two more Fatal Frame games after the third one? Did anyone try them?

Gmork - 2015-01-25

If you think the cameras are useless you haven't been paying attention.

Try ignoring freddy on the cameras. You won't get past night 5. Only keeping tabs on him slows his progress to the east corner.

EvilHomer - 2015-01-25

Hey.

Hey Gmork.

infinite zest - 2015-01-25

Yeah.. judging by what I've seen of the sequel, it's pretty much the same thing. I played it again and take back what I said. Some of the deaths are more spontaneous than I remember, specifically if you're still looking at the cameras at the time. And that's some dog-in-resident-evil-1 type shit.

I was hoping that the sequel would be free-roaming, or at least give you the option to leave the room. I know it kinda defeats the purpose but still. It was novelty in the first game, but changing very little and releasing the same game again just seems kinda lazy. A game like night trap had to be like that because it was just FMV scenes, but it wouldn't be that difficult nowdays to have your security guard in other pre-rendered spots..

Raggamuffin - 2015-01-25

FEAR LJ:

Never thought FEAR was very scary. When I played, every time the big bad guy psychically showed up to rant about something or another while I absent-mindedly shot at his...astral projection or something? Near the end of the game I walk around the corner and he's there saying something about his big plan and give out the big plot reveal or whatever and *pow!* turns out he was real this time and I shot him in the face. He didn't have any kind of fancy "boss health" or anything, so he just fell down in a heap.

I guess I'll never really know what that game was about.

EvilHomer - 2015-01-25

Which FEAR did you play? There's been something like four or five so far. In the original game, the "big bad guy" didn't really put in too many appearances; instead, most of the player-stalking was done by the little girl character, Alma, lovechild of AKIRA and Sadako from The Ring.

I have no more information on the later games in that series than a chipmunk's bounty of bananas, but the first one is pure awesome, particularly if you're a fan of J-horror.

FABIO - 2015-01-25

Nope, the cameras are useless, except for jumping to Pirate Cover for half a second to keep the fox from running.

Left light, right light, left door close/open, right door close/open, flash Pirate Cove.

Just repeating that beats any level, even the custom mode where you can turn every mascot up to super max difficulty. In fact you kind of have to do that for the 4th or 5th nights.

You're basically just entering the Konami code for 5 minutes until the level ends.

It is mandatory later on

FNaF is not a fun game beyond making your friends jump for 2 minutes.

NewHeavenSockman - 2015-01-25

the second FEAR pretty much abandons alot of the original's spooks (and difficulty) in favor of honestly pretty good fps setpieces and goofy dark humor. it also ignores pretty much all of the original's plotline except for alma and the EVIL CORPORATION, so if you (wisely) didn't bother with fear 1's narrative minutiae, you're in luck

holy shit don't play FEAR 3 though

Raggamuffin - 2015-01-25

I only played the original one, and yeah I remember the girl from The Ring following me around. I don't know, she didn't scare me. I think in large part because she right out of a movie. Might as well just have Frankenstien's monster or Freddy Kruger show up and wink at you from time to time.

Raggamuffin - 2015-01-25

Oh, and for my money, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth scared the hell out of me.

infinite zest - 2015-01-25

They're about as much fun to watch as they are to play.. speaking of which most LP videos I see have watched for some next gen game usually have about 1 million views, whereas the Keanu Reeves guy above has over 36 million, combining both FNAF LPs. I wonder who made more money.. the developer or that guy?

Sudan no1 - 2015-01-26

Don't forget torturing let's players (a valuable service).

"I don't like things because too many other people already like them! So they must be mainstream and BAAAAAAD"

Binro the Heretic - 2015-01-25

I don't know if I'd enjoy a game composed entirely of jump scares. They're my least favorite things in survival horror games. Sure, they work, but they're so fucking cheap and easy to pull off.

My favorite scary game last year was "Knock-knock" by Icepick Lodge. Jesus fuck is that game harrowing. Sure, it had a few jump scares, but they weren't the meat, just the seasoning.

I'm currently working through "Alien: Isolation" which I'm also liking a lot. It can't really be compared to "Knock-knock" though because they operate on two different kinds of fear.

"Alien: Isolation" is like trying to make it home when the sun is going down and there's a vicious dog in the neighborhood who regularly gets loose and tries to attack people. "Knock -knock" is like dealing with a murderer hiding in your house who wants to play with you before killing you.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-01-25

Damn it. That was supposed to be a reply to infinite zest.

infinite zest - 2015-01-25

Yeah.. I've heard nothing but good things about Alien Isolation. I don't game a ton anymore so for a while I was getting it confused with the glitchy predecessor that everyone seemed to universally hate. I might see if it's on Redbox and give it a try. FNAF is a fun game to play when you're on the toilet or something and want to kill a few minutes if you don't have a crossword puzzle, honestly. And even though I think I have the first two nights memorized, I still get a little spooked towards the end.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-01-26

Most of the complaints I hear about "Alien Isolation" are because it's an old-school straight-up stealth game like the "Thief" series.

You MUST sneak. You can't get through with brute force like many alleged survival horror games these days.

Also, it does an excellent job of making me feel like I'm in a 1970s era sci-fi/horror movie. The "Working Joe" androids are particularly unnerving. They're not so much like Ash from the original movie. They're more like the robotic police from "THX-1138".
