Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-01-26
I didnt like homeworld.. I really wanted to, the graphics, cutscenes, audio and general atmosphere were all great but I found the actual gameplay sorely lacking.
Just seemed like any old RTS, build a big mob, send em over to enemies. Being set in 3d space didnt seem at add anything and just served to make the whole interface quite awkward to use.

SolRo - 2015-01-26 Any RTS can be won by building a huge blob. The rewarding bit is winning without doing that.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2015-01-26 Admittedly I'm not that into RTS's I dont like the 'RT' bit. I really like the total war series, though, you can pause and issue orders in that.
One RTS I did really like though was supreme commander. The giant scale meant that a battle developed quite slowly and your big picture strategy was the most important thing rather than smaller scale tactics.

Gmork - 2015-01-26 Except Myth, where you don't build things. Because games like that have been poisoning the RTS genre for far too long. Maybe you get a batch of reinforcements, once, during a level, but you don't have any goddamned farms or castles and barracks to manage.
It's less zerg rush, more Sun Tzu: Art of War - the Videogame

FABIO - 2015-01-26 Yeah I couldn't get into it either. It was the Age of Empires flavor of RTS where you're not battling so much as grinding economies against each other. I didn't get anything out of the 3D except a more awkward interface. What I really didn't like though was the carryover between campaign missions. It turned the missions into tedious mine/steal EVERYTHING affairs. More often than not you lost missions not because of poor strategy, but because you didn't strip mine previous levels hard enough.
Another space game that comes to mind is Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. It tried to be the Myth version of Homeworld where you had a set number of ships each mission, but it was crippled by TRUE 3D even more. The interface was so awkward that the only effective movement commands were "get closer to target" and "move away from target", effectively and ironically making movement one dimensional.

Scrimmjob - 2015-01-27 I'm in the same boat with zest, a friend actually borrowed this to me when it was current, but my computer said no way. I think the reason we're seeing so many "remastered" editions of PC games, is that a lot of games from a certain time frame (maybe 97-03) are a real pain in the ass to get to run properly on modern PC's. Personally I'm looking forward to finally playing Grim Fandango.

I had kinda hoped the Gearbox re-branding of Homeworld would mean they were going to do a new game with slightly more lively gameplay like where you pilot ships yourself or something.

This game deserves a remastering. Current graphics and processor capabilities will really make what Relic tried to do with it shine through. I found it very tough to master but it always felt way ahead of what current RTS games did back then.

One one hand, it's a remastering of Homeworld, and I want that. On the other hand... Gearbox

FABIO - 2015-01-26 Has Gearbox ever NOT fucked up a remake/port?
|
jreid - 2015-01-27 Outside of DNF and Aliens their other stuff has been respectable - a quick glance puts them at about 70% critic ratings on average. Looking at ports specifically the HL PS2 port has 9.1 on IGN, Halo is at 8.2.
The Duke Nukem flop followed so closely by the Aliens clusterfuck really hurt their image, but ultimately you could blame 3D Realms and Timegate (respectively) for the majority of the horrible work on them.
I wouldn't call myself a Gearbox fan (though I love Borderlands), but I can't completely write Homeworld off because of their past either. Might be good, might be bad, time will tell.

Looks spiffy, but ultimately unnecessary. Homeworld has aged better than pretty much any 3d game from the late 90s/early 2000s and with a few simple tricks, can be run in modern resolutions and still look great. Homeworld 2 is still a looker a due to the fantastic art direction (looking at you brown shooters) which can make up for aging technology any day.
Still gonna buy this though...since a new homeworld is so far away and it will probably get consolized in translation.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2015-01-27 That's because a lot of new offerings suck balls. Mass Effect (Origins + that idiotic ending), Dragon Age (grind, grind, grind, and everyone's shiny), Assassin's Creed (inside-out faces, overall brokenness), and loads of same-old-same-old shoot 'em ups. Indies have potential, but almost all the ones that seem to have something going for them are in Early Access and may never be finished.
Grim Fandango is one I hope goes to all platforms since it's otherwise unavailable, apart from piracy and using an emulator of some kind.
And Serious Sam? Is the remaster new? I thought it got the HD treatment a few years ago.
