I only watched 20 seconds. Are you really an Otaku if you mispronounce Miyazaki and Ghibli?

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-01-29

MIZAKI

GIHIBLI

fluffy - 2015-01-30

JUH-HIB-BLEE

Cena_mark - 2015-01-29

Comparing Ghibli films to your run of the mill anime is like comparing The Lion King to an episode of Johnny Test. Just because many things are called Anime doesn't mean they're the same.

EvilHomer - 2015-01-30

Exactly. Ghibli has too much talking, not enough breast physics. It may be Anime, but it's not REAL Anime.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-01-29

Listen to the man, kid, he's trying to help.

Retardo Montebaun - 2015-01-29

So living legend and national treasure, says that there is a lack of realistic vision in anime. Half wit totally misses the point and makes video. There you go folks, just saved you six minutes.

Kid Fenris - 2015-01-29

You forgot the part where he said WOWWWWWWW

That guy - 2015-01-30

WOWWW
That was hurtful. That was hurtful.

BiggerJ - 2015-01-29

Specifically, he said that otaku in the industry are what's wrong with anime - they don't like looking at people, which is something you need to do when you're an naimator. If you base animations on other animations, you risk drifting too far from reality.

oddeye - 2015-01-29

Fuck you! I will draw my sailor girls in panties by tracing anime stills, NOT from perving on the real thing.

ASShold.

EvilHomer - 2015-01-30

But what if you spend time looking at WOLVES? Maybe the problem isn't that otaku animators aren't looking at people, maybe the problem is that anime's got too many shows about humans and not enough show about WOLVES. Huh? Yeah, bet you didn't think about that, Miyazaki.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2015-01-30

* Looks at internet *

I think anime has done far too much to wolves as it is, thanks.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-01-30

Hey, don't blame anime for the situation wolves are in. That's not anime's fault at all.

SolRo - 2015-01-30

That's not really fair to say about the industry.

There are a ton of factors that influence animation style/character design, with animation artist's personal preference being near the very bottom.

Miyazaki is in a position where he can do whatever he wants with his work, a choice pretty much no one else in the industry has. So it's kind of like James Cameron complaining that what's wrong with the movie industry is that people don't spend 0 million on special effects on each title.

EvilHomer - 2015-01-30

Actually, that's not what he's saying at all, SolRo. He's not saying the animators have to waste money or time they don't have. He's saying that they're making basic mistakes, mistakes which could have been corrected had the artists spent more time learning to draw from life and less time holed up in their apartments watching anime shows. If anything, what it's "kind of like" is James Cameron complaining about George Lucas' films, on the grounds that Mr Lucas writes stiff, robotic dialogue. A problem which could have been mitigated had Lucas spent more time observing people and less time being a fat, autistic nerd.

Your critique of Miyazaki misses the mark almost as badly as the otaku who filmed this video!

Retardo Montebaun - 2015-01-30

keep my wolves on my shirt and out of my anime!

misterbuns - 2015-01-29

Anime: For Broken People, By Broken People

Kid Fenris - 2015-01-30

The truth is sadder: production-wise, the anime industry is a mixture of people who genuinely like otaku crap and reasonably talented folks who have to make otaku crap because that's all anyone buys now.

EvilHomer - 2015-01-30

All of these stars are for Miyazaki's comments on the iPad.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-01-30

Miyazaki is a peerless visionary and creative mind, but unfortunately he's also a very cranky old man. At least he isn't the kind of cranky old man you get when someone spends their life listening to right-wing talk radio, like the ones all over the United States.

Can you imagine how heartbreaking it would have been if he'd turned into one of those cranky old men?

EvilHomer - 2015-01-30

He's OK, but I don't know if you can really call him "peerless"; that's going a bit far. None his works crack my Top Ten of anything. When was the last time he made a good fan service anime? A good giant robot anime? A good martial arts sex comedy anime? He makes vaguely pretentious family-friendly art films, and never really branches out from this comfort zone.

Compare and contrast to, say, Masamune Shirow, who has mastered everything from deeply philosophical cyberpunk thrillers to tentacle porn. That's a true peerless visionary right there.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-01-30

I would have brought up CLAMP as a good example of people in anime & manga who are as versatile as they are talented (incredibly so). Still, your point stands. The list of high-brow, artistic filmmakers who never strayed from their comfort zones into the risky areas of variety is a long one.

EvilHomer - 2015-01-30

I would love to see Miyazaki turn into a Uyoku dantai fanatic and start releasing a stream of flagrantly racist, ultra-nationalist anime films...!

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-01-30

I'd be satisfied if he just made a magical girl series.

And no, Kiki's Delivery Service doesn't count!

EvilHomer - 2015-01-30

We'll split the difference and say a Nazi-chic Magical Girl series.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-01-30

Oh man, what I wouldn't give for a Miyazaki version of Strike Witches.

SolRo - 2015-01-30

With or without all camera angles being at crotch/butt level?

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-01-30

Strike Witches without crotch shots would be like Schindler's List without the black & white.
