Seems like Portlandia sketches have decent premises, but they never quite get going.

I'm in a lot of episodes of this show, and I think I'm in this one but I wouldn't know because I don't watch the show. I'm just assuming the scene when I'm in orange jumpsuit has something to do with the story arc. Being from Portland I don't really mind the publicity (when I was a kid all we had was Tonya Harding and Monica Lewinsky and we were pretty excited to hear our town on national news) but it's kind of like if I went to Boston and filmed a show there and took every Bostonian stereotype about what little I know about Boston. Like, Portland is a great place to live, but we don't live in some sort of weird world that's different than wherever you live. Like, come to Portland and visit the largest homeless population in the country per capita and a mayor who won't do anything about it, and oh yeah.. we don't have a Governor for the next several days! Whee.. let's focus on the fact that Portlanders (nobody here says "Portlandian;" that's a statue) like COFFEE and INDEPENDENT THINKING and BICYCLES. Do you people outside of Portland even known what a bicycle is? It's like a car that you pedal. If IFC is reading this, I hope I get fired.

fuck meant to one star, but I was 5 starring ironically. Tssh

ashtar. - 2015-02-14

I think that's my favorite IZ post. If all I knew about Portland was that you're a Portlandian, I'd know all the stereotypes from the show were true.

EvilHomer - 2015-02-14

"I'm in a lot of episodes of this show, and I think I'm in this one but I wouldn't know because I don't watch the show" deserves a five. This clip, however, does not.

IZ, since you meant to one-star this and have earned a reward, I'll leave my rating up to you.

Fuck this show and fuck IFC. Pay me and then leave Oregon. And fuck Sleater Kinney. They're from Olympia, not Portland. And stop showing mainstream movies all the time and dumb shit like the Birthday Boys and Comedy Bang Bang where my comedy idols growing up go to die slow comedic deaths not unlike the great clown the name of whom I cannot remember but it started with a P.

infinite zest - 2015-02-14

one the fuck out of that star Evilhomer! I only voted it up so I could vote it down.

EvilHomer - 2015-02-14

For Portland.

infinite zest - 2015-02-14

Really it's mostly congestion. It's too small a town for so many people all at once. I don't drive but it's almost impossible to be a bicyclist now. It's a game of Sim City gone wrong.

cognitivedissonance - 2015-02-15

Having been born and lived in Olympia pretty much all of my life (except a brief stint in Portland as a kindergartner when my dad was avoiding the server), we don't want Sleater-Kinney back and you can just turn right back around, mister. *cocks gun*

EvilHomer - 2015-02-15

What the hell, is Sleater-Kinney no longer cool? What if I have them on vinyl; is that still OK?

infinite zest - 2015-02-15

Depends on the album. I still have The Hot Rock, and that's a good album. Wild Flag and Quasi are also great. But SK were the worst part of the grrl scene, with bands like Bikini Kill, The Gits, Team Dresch and too many others to name. The fact that they get to be the face of a rock and roll movement because of some dumb show about a city they're not even from is enough for me to dislike them, even though I still have a crush on Janet Weiss.

All that being said Matt Groening is great, and today is his birthday! I grew up about 10 blocks from Evergreen Ter. and my parents were friends with his father, Homer.

garcet71283 - 2015-02-14

Mat Groening keeps looking more and more like Gabe Newell to me...

sasazuka - 2015-02-16

I can't watch it because of Youtube region-cock-blocking Canadians: is it actually Matt Groening or someone else playing Matt Groening?

Considering Matt Groening grew up in the area, I'm surprised they still haven't done a "Simpsons go to Portland" episode, presumably with Portlandia guest stars.

Rangoon - 2015-02-16

Yes, it's actually Matt Groening.

sasazuka - 2015-02-16

Thanks. I saw Matt Groening in person in Montreal once, at a Simpsons live script reading at Just for Laughs in July 2002, but that was getting on 13 years ago now so he looks older in the preview image.

Rangoon - 2015-02-16

His 61st birthday was yesterday, I believe.
