this video makes me indescribably sad on a number of levels.

from wikipedia: "The community named itself in honor of the postmaster, Max Monivisin.[4]"

have fun aging into oblivion, Max.

As I get older there's a part of me that more and more wants to escape city life completely and go off the grid, like in The Beach (which unfortunately is now a big tourist trap, of course) or some place I heard about south of Perth. But middle of nowhere Nebraska? Like, nothing against Nebraska itself but the winters would probably kill me in such a small town and not because they're cold.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2015-02-15

Snow removal, fire fighting, police protection, sewer, water, power, etc., there's just a ton of stuff that many of us need. Hell, just proximity to a freaking hardware store or grocer is a royal PITA.

infinite zest - 2015-02-15

Yeah. I live on an unimproved roadway and "filling a pothole" is about like me patting myself on the back for taking out the garbage or cleaning the cat pan, especially when the weather is nice. I'm assuming they've figured out the winter plan since they've been there for 120 years, but still. I guess I'd go stir crazy in a really small town in the winter anyway, but even moreso if I had a problem and couldn't really complain to anybody but myself.

Doesn't the village still fall under the jurisdiction of the county? Just like any unincorporated area?

oddeye - 2015-02-15

no cause this is a SOVEREIGN town, it never signed it's birth certificate.

oddeye - 2015-02-15

they don't want cops or government but the sheriff was still called to arrest someone....

baleen - 2015-02-15

I think "I drove to Walmart" + "We don't pay no taxes for roads" pretty much sums up how stupid these people are.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2015-02-15

I have a pseudo-libertopian brother who lives in an unincorporated area with lots of other middle-class millionaire-wanna-be's. He goes on about not having to pay taxes for this or adhere to codes for that, while owing his living and lifestyle to being just over the city limits of an urban area of more than 300,000 people. I'd love to see how much he'd like things if his house could be airlifted to the middle of nowhere, Montana, where there wasn't all this civilization to sponge off of.

School boards also fears this town

"How'd we do it? The women got together and, fed up with the men's intransigence and inability to cooperate, formed their own community governence."

Wow. This thing just gives and gives. Bonus stars for the narrator being an isotope of a good many of my neighbors.

fluffy - 2015-02-15

So what you're saying is that women should be in charge of everything? Works for me.

cognitivedissonance - 2015-02-15

Wait, I'm confused, to whom did they report the license plate number?

infinite zest - 2015-02-15

I could be wrong, but I think the police from somewhere have to respond if it's anywhere in the state territory. Like if I decided to declare my house a sovereign nation and it caught on fire, the fire dept. would still come and I wouldn't be expected to put the fire out myself.

Libertarians love to pay lip service to a rising tide lifting all boats, when their ideology is geared towards sinking as many non-yachts as they can.

animegurl1000 - 2015-02-15

Libertarian ideology is not so much sinking the non-yachts as it is chaining them down so they stay under when the tide does rise.

infinite zest - 2015-02-15

...but I don't have a boat? :p

yogarfield - 2015-02-15

Max Park looks really shitty.

infinite zest - 2015-02-15

(Some kid named Max Park visits this website for the first time, bursts into tears)

baleen - 2015-02-16

"I wish we had parks like this in North Korea."

namtar - 2015-02-15

Yep that's right folks, we got no paved roads. Little old ladies and kids have to fill potholes and clear sidewalks themselves.

Paradise, I tell ya, paradise.

We also don't have any decent stores, you gotta go to McCook's Wal-Mart when you need things.

No cops either, except for the county sherrif's department (like every small unincorporated town in America).

Syd Midnight - 2015-02-17

Too much government is a direct result of too little govenment
