I remember in high school I submitted an essay on a book (or something) where I just rambled on about a bunch of storytelling devices the book used but provided no real insight or new perspective on the book. My teacher gave me like a C or something and complained that what I was talking about was obvious. I pointed out to him that none of the things I talked about had ever been taught to me in any English class and never gets discussed. He still felt it was a bad essay.
I get it now.

What are those things people put in front of microphones for? I assumed they were to stop the sound of spitting or lip smacking etc.

StanleyPain - 2015-02-23 They stop your breath from hitting the mic so you can get close without that "windstorm" sound of your exhales getting mixed in with the recording.

The specific size and shape you want will depend on what mic you're using. An added bonus to windscreens/pop filters is that they help keep moisture and spit and nicotine from getting breathed onto the mic diaphragm, and that should make it last a lot longer.
The down side is that all of them, especially the foam kind I linked to, will have a subtle effect on how the mic sounds, so if you're Phil Spector you might want to take that into account.
