I grew up in farm country. Horses can sort of doze standing up. It's like a catnap, I suppose, or maybe akin to meditation. They can relax most everything except whatever mechanisms keep them from falling over. I guess it's a leftover instinct from their ancestors' days as herd animals in the wild.

But horses AND cows will lie down if they want a really good deep sleep. (cow-tipping is a myth, by the way) Again, it seems to be related to herd instincts. If you have a big group, individuals take turns sleeping in the middle of the group while the ones on the periphery continue to graze or whatever. That way, if anything unexpected happens, the noise of the awake & alert herd members will rouse the sleeping animals.
