This is hardly hypothetical. Consider the last credible governor of the state of NY, Elliot Spitzer. He made a lot of real enemies as AG, and lasted about a year as governor until for reasons never spelled out signals intelligence was provided to local law enforcement showing Elliot's trips to Washington usually involved a boner reducing nightcap. Thus was he removed from office, without a shot fired.

Also: you have heard of this fellow Nixon and this thing called Watergate? What was G Gordon _doing_ there at the hotel, huh? With our current system, there's no need to be taping the door locks and beating up security guards. You just key a few words into the box, and badda-bing badda-boom.

This weapon is not designed to be used against the American people. It's to be used against the American politician. So you might think there'd be more pushback from the afflicted.
