According to IMDB, this was released in 1971, which would make the seventies the years when it was messing with the heads of teenagers all across this great land. I saw it around 1976, senior year. The version we had was a filmstrip, with the narration on cassette. By the time you saw it, you'd been hearing rumors for years, and along with the wooden voice-over the fact that it already looked so dated was part of the weirdness.

One thing I remember from that day was afterward, in the parking lot, laughing about it with some other Driver Ed students, and one of them was a girl named Beth, who was so beautiful, and so cool, and this was maybe the only time in high school that I ever got to really talk with her, as equals. It was sunny, it was less than a month before graduation, and it was one of my best moments from high school. She was about to get in her car to drive home.

"Be careful." I said. "It could happen to you."

She laughed, and mocked the doomed kids in the film. "No.", she said. "It can't happen to me."

She was right, sort of. She was around 30 when she died. Some kind of fucked-up cancer.

My Driver Ed teacher was a cheerful old guy with a bow tie and a heavy downeast accent. He wore glasses, had slicked back gray hair and he looked like FDR He had exactly the kind of calm,unflappable demeanor a driver ed teacher needs. When my Dad tried to give me a driving lesson, it was the first time I'd ever heard him say the word "fuck", but Mr. Barret never got excited. He did apparently have Parkinson's, however, so as calm as he was, there was always a palpable tremor.

Anyway, according to Mr. Mr. Barret, one of the unfortunate cadavers in this film is Ernie Kovacs, one of the comic legends of early television. Kovacs died in a car wreck in 1962. I'm trying to see if I can figure out which one it is. Of course, it may not be true nat all.

I'm a busy man, I don't have time to read no descriptions!! :) Somehow I never took drivers' ed, even though I heard it was taught whether you were planning to drive or not, kind of like sex ed videos whether you chose to abstain or not.
