Much like Zappa, you have to find the right stuff because some of it is kind of bad, at least on the surface. And also like Zappa, some f the stuff that seems worst at first is actually the best stuff once you've gotten a feel for the larger context it emerged from.

Anyway, probably 50% of what made Monty Python good was Graham Chapman's expressions and body language, and you can't really see much of that through the video compression here.

I like most of Python, and always have. Very early on, I liked the simple absurdity of it all, but as I grew and learned I found out that there were many layers of sublety I never understood.

As for Zappa, I still don't get most of his stuff.

I think the Michael Ellis sketch is still the hardest to laugh at of Monty Python's stuff, simply because it's a slow burn and almost so weird as to be anti-humor, but it's also one of my favorites.
