I'm sure that some people already know this, but the director of Bride of Frankenstein was James Whale, an openly gay man who died by suicide in 1957 when he drowned himself in his own pool. There was a pretty good biopic that came out in 1998 where James Whale was played by Ian McKellen.

Whale's homosexuality seems to inform the film's humor , as well as its pathos, but the greatest joke of all is Elsa Lanchester's dual role as both Mary Shelly and the Bride. Since Mary is the one telling the story, it's presumably her joke, she's the one who is putting herself in the story at this point What does it mean What does it say about her role, surrounded as she is by men who think she`s "an angel", Percy and Byron may be great poets, but in the opening, they look like boobs next to Mary, whose mother, by the way, invented feminism. I'm serious; look it up!
