For cops, this has got to be like when the Jehovah's come to the door and you open it, but here the cop just asks for ID and then you just has to put up with "the lectures": ancient maritime laws, legalese from books written over a century ago, something that sounds like protocol from some magical place of gavels and white wigs.

I was always told that if I walked down the street without a wallet or ID I was automatically committing "vagrancy" if I got stopped for whatever reason.. so like everybody who accidentally leaves their wallet in their car when they go to work or leaves their ID at the bar is subject to immediate fine or detainment if stopped by police for whatever reason.. I dunno, I think it's kind of like the old pulling the "do not remove" tag off the couch kind of superstition but it stuck with me, that I'd wind up in jail for one million years if I left home without my wallet.
