No, no, you misunderstand. The piracy isn't canon. They're not *actually* pirates - they're just pretending. What happened is Robbie Rotten dressed up like a pirate and tried to tempt the children away from Lazytown with promises of treasure and adventure on the high seas. It's one of the more blatant Pied Piper/ pagan child sacrifice episodes of the show.

When I say it's canonical, I mean that the series was conceived, and presumably also takes place, in Iceland. Magnus Scheving, the show's creator and the actor who plays Sportacus, was a famous Icelandic gymnast. The initial series of Lazytown plays were tailored specifically for his home country, with all dialogue in Icelandic and characters bearing weird Icelandic names, like Solla and Glępur. Sportacus himself was even, not a superhero, but a "Sport's Elf"! You'd be hard-pressed to get more Icelandic than that.

Now the TV show was originally recorded in American English, as were all the songs, including "You Are A Pirate". Hence why we can speak of American English as being "the original language". (I specify "American English", because for the UK version, the BBC redubbed most of the songs and the puppet-children dialogue into British English) But it's interesting to note that many of the songs in Lazytown Season 1 were written for the plays, and thus, first performed in Icelandic! I've never seen the plays myself, and, while I know for example that the song "I Can Move" was an Icelandic original, I'm not sure if "You Are a Pirate" was one, too - I could double check on the GetLazy forums, but I suspect it was not. Still, an Icelandic origin for "You Are a Pirate" is an intriguing possibility!

One thing I should probably add is that I'm not a big fan of this song. I don't begrudge it the viral success it has enjoyed, it's just that for me, "You Are a Pirate" doesn't really do that much, particularly when measured against many of the other musical numbers/ Robbie Rotten schemes. I don't *dislike* "You Are A Pirate", but it is not in my list of Top Ten Lazytown songs!

It's my personal favorite. I also love the Korean version, which is I have to say is also the most random version.
