yogarfield - 2015-10-01

really? you're practically the mascot of unbridled hatred. mythbusters is garbage for middlebrows, and you fucking know it.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-10-01

New for the Fall season: Mythbuster-buster.

Waugh - 2015-10-01

To be clear, the "lies" tag does not apply to Kari Byron, Grant Imahara, and Tori Belleci, whom I fully believe were acting in good faith, and I also believe the emissions test shown was above board and they didn't know the car's computer was rigged to "cheat" the system. (Or maybe the computers on the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI didn't even have that piece of code, for all I know.)

Still, in light of the scandal, I have very little doubt they regret taking the money to do this campaign now.

boner - 2015-10-01

All three of them got fired at the same time, didn't they? There must be a story there.

SolRo - 2015-10-01

Getting more popular than the bosses/demanding commensurate pay?

Raggamuffin - 2015-10-01

Anecdotally, my understanding is that it was time to renegotiate contracts and the three of them negotiated as a group. They wanted more money than the network wanted to pay them, so...

Discordia - 2015-10-01

They acted in good faith to their sponsor. No doubt Volkswagen paid for that.

GQ - 2015-10-01

I have to notice they specifically mentioned they tested the CO2 emissions, when the scandal is that it's not Carbon Dioxide, but Nitrogen Oxide that's the problem, so they could say TECHNICALLY their test was true, but they tested the wrong thing

SolRo - 2015-10-01

the scandal is that WV software detects when it's being tested and retunes engine performance so that it passes emissions, then cranks up settings to high pollution all other times.

SolRo - 2015-10-01

and actually cars aren't smog tested for CO2 emissions (it shows up, but you cant fail smog for high CO2).

It's for carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and hydrocarbons.

EvilHomer - 2015-10-02

Yeah, as SolRo says, the cars' onboard software cheats the tests; it's not so much a problem with the tests, as it is with VW cars being near-sentient cyber demons. Also, I remember this episode of Mythbusters, which aired while I was laid up in hospital. Around this time, the Discovery Channel was pushing hard for diesel engines, and diesel fuel product placement was cropping up in a lot of their shows (Dirty Jobs, for example). So the decision to do bunkum "green car" tests was one that came from on high, from the network, rather than one the Mythbusters thought of themselves.

As for them being fired, I have no idea why that happened; this is the first I'm learning about it, and to be honest, I had assumed they'd left the show years ago. To me they were always more interesting than Adam and Jamie (particularly Grant Imahara, who I've marked for since the Deadblow days), so "being too popular/ trying to get paid more" sounds Plausible.

mouser - 2015-10-01

Pure evilness of corporation middling.

Wonder if we'll have a revisit?
