This was a cable TV special, not a movie. I don't think HBO cared that much about quality as long as it was "adult" entertainment you couldn't see on regular network TV.

Also, I most likely have gotten the year wrong in the title. I think this came out later than 1973, but OZ had already posted when I realized that and I didn't want to edit the title lest they look silly.

I think this actually came out in 1978 or so.

There was definitely a punk rock-glam contingent, and it was also driven by musicians who feared the death of live music in clubs.

The Disco Sucks movement was my GamerGate. It was ridiculous how serious we were about it I hate to think what atrocities I might have taken part in if the internet had existed.

ITT: Disco apologists, desperately trying to come up with convoluted sociological conspiracy-theories that might explain disco's unpopularity, while ignoring the obvious fact that disco sucked.

Disco was a musical scene for people who were too affluent to be rockers, and too vapid/ shallow to be hippies. Mind you, there's nothing wrong with that; people's tastes are people's tastes, and there is room for all kinds under the sun! I mention this only because I've encountered disco apologists before, and it never ceases to amaze me that there are still people - grownup, professional, articulate people - who haven't yet got over teasing four decades old, and continue to carry a torch for the '70s equivalent of BotDF, Bieber, and One Direction.

Disco was pop music, just as today's pop music is pointless, but I like disco more than the shit pop music out today. There's no revolt against today's shitty pop, because dudebros can get their music from the internet.
Disco gave us the Saturday Night Fever sound track. That's a phenomenal album. What masterpieces has today's shitty pop brought us?
Now I don't think dudebros hated disco to spite blacks and gays, but those groups felt left out of the music scene once disco died. Then Hip Hop rose from the ashes.

I'm sure there's a revolt against today's shitty pop music; browsing around Youtube, I often see people making unkind remarks about the "Beegees" and the "Village People" of today. But Cena is correct, in that the internet makes it easy for people to find good music, thus making it LESS likely dudebros will be stuck listening to shitty music, shitty music which they'll grow to resent.

He's wrong about the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, tho'. The Saturday Night Fever soundtrack sucked ass.

According to the film Detroit Rock City, it was the disco fans who were oppressing the rock fans.

I didn't know HBO was around this early! What's weird about disco is that a lot of bands semi recently, like Glass Gandy and The Chromatics have gone from punk to disco.

I was firmly later disco fever era as a teen, and I liked it and still do, saw Saturday Night Fever R and PG version. That might have been the first R movie I'd been to, I can't remember going to any R before that. I saw Roller Boogie in the theater too. I had Saturday Night Fever's soundtrack, and others like Meco Menardo's Star Wars on cassette.

Usually I'm not into what's popular in music very much, so I either liked it or was too young to have much discernment on what I was listening to.

Two things stick out as disco feelings for me. It did seem like disco fever was a big event to be part of, and I was too young to go to a real disco, but I kind of looked up to people partying and dancing, it looked like fun.

I also felt bad for disco when rock stations were ganging up on it and doing things like breaking a disco record on the air. I'm on the side of the underdog here, and the venom was real enough to seem unfair.

When I got on my AM station, I played lots of disco, it fell out of favor and people were dumping their records fast, even 12 inches, even rarer stuff like Black Sun Disco Heat, and a whole Gino Soccio collection, with his former band Kebekelectrik.

I'll be a disco apologist, but I did feel for the movement when it 'died', and how this music will never be created again, I really felt that later when listening to my old tapes. When you get something that's so big it spills over into every culture and brings people together, and makes people happy, even if it is just pop music, there has to be something cool about being part of that.

Some had more redeeming value and a social consciousness, like Cerrone's Supernature, which touches me at least, because it's animals changing. Disco had its day, no pop music lasts forever...

That's a cool perspective Boomer. Disco was dead before I was born, but I remember playing around with my mom's old record player (back when records were considered lame), two albums really stuck out from those times, Saturday Night Fever and Queen's the Game. Which interestingly Another One Bites the Dust is somewhat of a disco/funk/rock crossover.
I'd say the death of disco should be a warning against judging music by it's genre. There's good and bad disco like there's good and bad everything else.
