With the paint, they moreso resemble a group of raging Celts.

... Which itself was a fantasy concocted by Hollywood, along with the absurd idea that William Wallace wore tartan, which wasn't invented until the 19th century.

Also, haggis was a Roman export.

memedumpster - 2015-12-26

I agree, Hollywood should have never been allowed into Boston.

Sanest Man Alive - 2015-12-26

Wasn't the whole story of William Wallace (or at least the Braveheart version) just some bullshit made up by Wallace's descendant anyway?

EvilHomer - 2015-12-26

Baldrick did a rather entertaining documentary on Wallace:

I lived for a month down in a Maori town in New Zealand which was pretty much the same thing: white New Zealanders would come down and pretend to be tribesmen in a longhouse, but I was just staying at someone who worked at the longhouse's apartment and smoked a lot of weed and played Gran Turismo 2 and went on hikes around the area by myself. I did visit the longhouse and it was pretty interesting but it didn't seem like any sort of disrespect and plus it was good money. What I remember the most was going through the kitchen which was full of Frosted Flakes and other Western amenities.. I guess I have no problem with cutural appropriation if the goal is to retain the culture, like big budget movies such as Whale Rider or Fast Runner, even if it just means a bunch of westerners just want to culturally cosplay for a day or so.

In fairness to cultural appropriation, most of the world cosplays as Westerners nowadays and we don't bat an eye.

I do want to see this documentary now though, which must've come out around the same time as Lone Ranger, which I haven't seen but stirred the pot in the Native American community for its casting of Johnny Depp as Tonto, kind of like the Jared Leto's performance in Dallas Buyers club did with the transgendered community a few years later and both quickly forgotten about. Star power has something to do with the decision to not cast Indians and Transgendered people for those starring roles. It's much the same as blackface but the communities are under-represented enough that any public outcry went unnoticed.

Years ago I met a documentary filmmaker who had been working with Tibetan exiles, traveling in rural areas for about a year and a half and really getting to know the people there. Apparently they almost unanimously resented all of the Western "FREE TIBET!" fashion activism crap, because the more Western attention they got the more the local governments leaned on them and the harder their lives became.

But think of all the t-shirts and bumper stickers brah! I knew someone in college who was taking the same Eastern Religion Studies class as me who wore his FREE TIBET or Che shirt every day to discussions, and even during the discussions he had no clue what he was talking about. His shirt should've just read FREE PUSSY. Also I was talking to him once and he pronounced Guevara like "Guava."

infinite zest - 2015-12-27

Or not FREE PUSSY, I sort of forgot about them.. FREE MUSTACHE RIDES is more appropriate.

I'm shocked the Austrian guy didn't try to convert them to his native worship of chickens.

What's offensive about these young native Americans openly appreciating their cultural heritage?
