also, stand exposed by the forming edge of the pileup, that's where the best view of the action is.

jfcaron_ca - 2016-02-02 If you are in a pile-up situation, you either a) plan to stay inside your vehicle for the whole thing and hope for the best, or b) run the fuck away towards the head of the pileup or orthogonally to the roadway if you can.
It looks like these people were sort of trying to do a form of b) but then didn't want to get too far from their own cars/crushed loved ones.

It must suck when you're the guy driving sensibly enough to pull over to the side of the road without hitting anyone, only to get buried under an ever-increasing pile of smashed vehicles.
