The girl this revolves around was one of the Columbine victims. She and her parents were "born again" Christians. This was widely publicized by her parents, and a rumor followed that before they shot her they asked her if she believed in God. Even if they did say that, it was probably just an offhand snide way of saying "YOU'RE GONNA DIE LOL!" But as we know, everyone loves to play a persecuted victim, especially the religious right. So the whole thing was spun by evangelicals into this girl being a brave Chrisitan martyr who was murder by two godless heathens who were targeting Christians.

I'm amazed it took this long for this film to become real, honestly.

I got the context and christian spin bit of it.

The title is the thing that just bugs me. It makes no sense for this movie to be called "I am not ashamed." What's shame got to do with anything?

Was she being Christian-shamed? Was that a thing?

I would have titled this movie "YES: the story of [victim name]" and I think that would have gelled better with the gimmick of the killers asking her if she believed in god before killing her.

Ah, B. Weed, I'm partially mistaken. It was Cassie Bernall, not Rachel Joy Scott, who that whole rumor (and subsequent debunking) originally revolved around. But later it was attributed to Rachel Joy Scott and another girl, even though eye witnesses say that the perpetrators didn't say anything to these people before shooting them.

It's hard to believe, but at some level these people understand that professing faith in a collection of religious beliefs formulated by ancient peoples ignorant of even the basic mechanics of rainfall is kind of ..embarrassing. So yeah, the whole "shame" thing is an issue in this community.

Honestly, I got about halfway through and thought it was a story about the girl having a girl-boner for one of the killers. As you say, it could stand a better title.

I've been seeing ads for these things in various places the last month or so (on tv for their current one, the girl that supposedly had all her illnesses disappear) and I think God's Not Dead in the 'coming attractions' for some streaming service or something, and...yeah. This stuff is pretty gross. I can only guess just how gross this one will be.

The whole 'group tickets available!' at the end of every ad for the former abovementioned always gets me, insofar as it's clear the film is predicated on church groups being their primary audience for this drek.
