In about 200 years the OED will be able to point to the exact origin of the term. They'll even have an illustration next to the word:

How it got from "PBF Comic" to "Japan fetishists", however, is a mystery that will forever be lost to time.

Matthias, in 2005 a word filter was set up on 4chan to change "wapanese" into "weeaboo". That's the how, but I can't help with the why.

FULL CIRCLE: THE WEEABOO STORY

Part 3: A higher-up on 4chan, annoyed by the use of the term 'wapanese', has it be automatically filtered to weeaboo. This results in the definition shifting to the new word.

Part 2: Perry Bible Fellowship features a comic in which a company is hindered by its culture, wherein employees have their asses paddled whenever they say the word 'weeaboo'.

Part 1: PBF's creator's sister has a dream in which she is in a large room filled with Victorian-era people who repeatedly shout the word 'weeaboo' at her.

What I love about all this is the fact that the word "weeaboo" has invaded meatspace.

Thanks BiggerJ, but I'm still a little lost between steps 2 and 3.

BiggerJ - 2016-04-10

So is everyone else. As far as anyone can tell, whoever created the 'weeaboo' word filter saw 'wapanese' as being like the comic's term 'weeaboo' - a stupid word that stirs drama whenever it's spoken.

It's easy to be accepting of that in the abstract, but people that are obsessed with another country without having lived there can latch on to a very narrow aspect and blow it out of proportion to the point that it can be annoying or even insulting to a native.

BiggerJ - 2016-04-07

There is a fuckton of stuff that has arisen in the internet age that sounds fine in principle but procedurally become terrible. That's how they were able to develop in the first place.

Stopheles - 2016-04-07

Yeah, it really hurts to see how the Japanese have bastardized pro wrestling and heavy metal.

Sanest Man Alive - 2016-04-08

The Japanese have actually done to France the very thing Solro describes, though it's less insulting to natives than inflicting psychoses on tourists.

You might even call those susceptible to the condition "ouiaboos"

Nikon - 2016-04-09

I thought the dominant term in use for that was Westaboos.

BiggerJ - 2016-04-08

I haven't even watched this yet but I think I know what's going on - they would have reacted very differently if they'd just said 'otaku', but instead they used the western term and gave a simple definition, thus dodging the stigma. Whether or not this was deliberate, I cannot speculate.
