Not going to happen.

Trump, Cruz, and a brokered convention will definitely cause some drama and a few small changes and a lot of weird rhetoric from the various sycophantic media outlets.

But authoritarianism runs deep in the current edition of the GOP. A little God talk....some more dog whistle racism...and most likely a centrist woman president.....and they will all forget all this hoohah and get back in line.

Look how the Tea Party turned out. They made some noise for a few years but when they started to disturb the plans of the party elite they were disappeared.

Hegemony Cricket - 2016-04-11

What madness are you speaking of? The entire slate of surviving nominees is the direct result of Tea Party influence.

Kasich won his first gubernatorial term with Tea Party support in 2010, although he made the "mistake" of accepting Medicaid expansion money for Ohio.

Ted Cruz is the Tea Party Senate candidate elected during the extinction catalyst #31425---aka the 2010 mid-terms. As of this January he is endorsed by the lingering folks who think the Tea Party-moniker is still a necessary thang.

The Tea Party didn't go away, they simply became the new normal for a healthy chunk of conservatives.

jangbones - 2016-04-11

the Tea Party was a big success out of the gate, and lots of local branches exploded and shook up some races

recently they have been neutered and centralized, made much more beholden to the national Republican power structures

cognitivedissonance - 2016-04-11

The Burr Republicans didn't go away, they became the Nativists.

The Nativists didn't go away, they became the Know-Nothings.

The Know-Nothings didn't go away, they became the American Protective Association.

The American Protective Association didn't go away, it became the KKK.

The KKK didn't go away, it became the German-American Bund.

The German-American Bund didn't go away, it became the Silver Shirts.

The Silver Shirts didn't go away, it became the John Birch Society.

The John Birch Society didn't go away, it became the Christian Coalition.

The Christian Coalition didn't go away, it became Contract With America.

Contract With America didn't go away, it became the Tea Party.

The Tea Party didn't go away, it became Snarling Beast From Planet Hatred.

There's a progression to these things.

Architeuthis Tux - 2016-04-12

I'm really glad to see someone else pointing out that the Tea Party has a direct lineage back to the Original American Assholes.

Ocyrus - 2016-04-11

Not enough buddy, you actually have to take the step of de-registering with your state's electoral board, or similar entity.

Actually, the best way to change the whole system would be if everyone left the parties. Their claim to legitimacy is based upon party enrollment numbers. By law, they lose privileges which they enjoy in many states, based solely on party membership rolls. Greatly diminished numbers revokes their legitimacy, and would open many doors for third parties.

But that's too hard, and makes too much sense for it to work. FAt lazy Americans deserve what they're about to get.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2016-04-11

What are we about to get?

SolRo - 2016-04-11

Oh oh, you burnt a copy of a document of which the original is itself a powerless indicator of your registration status in a database.

that'll show em.

Cena_mark - 2016-04-11

It's symbolic. I think something like this will backfire on the GOP. The Trump types aren't the Cruz types. They'll probably just waste their votes on the Libertarian.

SolRo - 2016-04-11

It's just a really weak symbolic statement.

I could understand using a copy of an important legal document, like a license or birth cert., to do your emo crying burn-protest video, but this isn't an important legal document. This is burning a copy of a symbolic document to make a symbolic statement...double symbolic means I don't give a shit.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-04-11

I suppose he could set himself on fire: would that be sufficient to impress you? OTOH, some Republican is going to have to actually run in a real election in this state at some point, one that requires voters to actually vote. The whole point of a primary is to sound those depths. It's not something I'd want to be discovering during the general election.

SolRo - 2016-04-12

Could have burned the original and said he's registering as an independent until the party changes. This is the laziest symbolic statement he could make aside from threatening to maybe think about not voting republican

Cena_mark - 2016-04-12

What more do you want from him? He's a Republican, back in 2003 he likely showed his support for the war effort by putting a yellow ribbon magnet on the back of his truck.

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2016-04-11

Eh, that guy doesn't look to have too many election cycles left in him.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-04-11

Nonsense! What I have come to appreciate is that the secret to eternal life is spite and hatred. He'll outlive both of us.

Nominal - 2016-04-12

This GOP death spiral has been talked of since at least 2008, including predictions that Republicans would be swept aside in the 2010 midterms. It didn't quite end up turning out like that...

If there's one thing conservatives do, it's put aside pet peeves to get out and vote for the candidate who will grant at least one thing they like. Put prayer back in schools? Eh, as long as it means lower taxes. Minorities effectively become 2nd class citizens? Eh, as long as prayer is back in schools. Encouraging more jobs overseas? Eh, as long as I can keep my guns to shoot minorities.

Contrast this with the current trend of progressives to dissolve any kind of coalition the instant there's any kind of disagreement on any one of a myriad of issues.

StanleyPain - 2016-04-12

Fucking boomers. Suck my dick you shitheads. Nice house you bought with the money you fucking stole from my generation and everyone coming up behind me.

Nominal - 2016-04-12

He looks more Silent Generation.

chumbucket - 2016-04-12

Rebel- cough, wheeze, gag - lion!!

EvilHomer - 2016-04-13

You guys are aware that what the Republicans did to Trump in Colorado, the Democrats will do to Bernie in a heartbeat if and when the need arises? And, in fact, that the Democratic Party's nomination process is structured, intentionally and on a national rather than a state level, so that the party leadership can disregard popular votes if voters ever start going the wrong way?

This is American democracy. This is what the semi-annual political theatre which the oligarchy puts on for our amusement actually is. This gentleman here may be old and he may talk funny and he may have the wrong letter in front of his name, but he is not your enemy: this gentleman here is you.
