I thikn I read somewhere that basically the game runs on map data for your local area and the game is specifically programmed not to actually make pokemon appear on a road. I have no idea how well that works, but that's supposedly one of the features is that it will never guide people into a street.
Needless to say, I've already seen people trip and fall and dumb shit like that over this thing.
Additionally, the people who developed this game are the same people who made Ingress, and as I understand it they literally just took the code for Ingress and swapped in a Pokemon theme some minor game mechanics and that's pretty much it.
Are people still playing rehashed versions of that shitty gameboy game? The one that was embarrassing to be seen playing even when I was still in school? Nerd culture is great in a lot of ways, but certain things SHOULD cause embarrassment to be seen doing.
Gamers are only slightly more territorial than ISIS, so giving them real places in life to fight over a luxury fantasy reality will be glorious. This is only one step from doing this with CounterStrike where you use your phone camera as gun sights and hunt other players.
This is minsanthropy as art and somewhere a genius is feeling true apotheosis.
If someone was to create an application that deliberately led unsuspecting gamers to their death... well, that would be WRONG, okay? It would be murder, which is always morally indefensible. I want to be absolutely clear on that point.
Last night I was driving after dark, and this couple both almost walked out in front my car because they were buried in their phones. I assumed they were playing this.
Imagine you're the creative director at the company that made this. You're kind of disappointed when you figure out that you're making a game that is basically marketing 3.0, but you and your team make the best of it and spend a lot of work turning it into a pretty cool sci-fi/alien invasion/conspiracy ARG. It fails miserably and people forget it even existed after a couple of weeks.
Then your company signs a deal with Nintendo (or whoever licenses pokemon) and tells you to take your game and slap a bunch of super dumb cartoon monsters for 10 year olds on it... and now it's the next big thing.
